@SBJ KC is not a soccer capital. I can name half a dozen cities who have spent hundreds of millions on soccer the last few years alone

The Kansas City metro area has invested $650M over 15 years to become America’s soccer capital, alongside a $165M budget for the FIFA World Cup ⚽ Since winning the 2022 bid, the city built a new airport, leased 200 buses and renovated the Kansas City Chiefs stadium to prepare for the tournament. I was stunned at the state of downtown St. Louis when I was there a couple of weeks ago. Ballpark Village is great. But city leaders need to have some major questions about how that downtown is in its current state.

@PerfectFratGuy @twelcher15 STL's reputation, especially downtown, has worsened in the last 20+ years. STL is not perceived as a destination city at this time for the FF. There's a lot of "ifs" associated with STL, but STL can't get out of its own way to address those issues properly.

@Slowpokeoak @twelcher15 STL reputation is no different than the last time they hosted. This city has hosted other big time NCAA events including the Frozen Four just last year. The only thing stopping a competitive bid is upgraded facilities, if STL had that they would be in running along w/ anyone

@twelcher15 1) STL can come up with $20M; 2) The Dome sucks; 3) STL is not a destination city; 4) STL has a BAD perception around the country; 5) And this guy knows it's more than an up-hill battle for STL - why do you think he's smiling throughout the interview - he knows the truth.

@racerx150 @ArtLippo2 The airport hub loss was because TWA merged with American. Blame Ronald Reagan and that admin for loosening anti-trust laws which has resulted in the Wild West of mergers the last 30 yrs, un proportionally affecting Midwest cities losing HQs to coast

@ArtLippo2 Remember St. Louis Centre, The Landing, all the restaurants around Busch II? Politicians are greedy and pushing business out. We have no news agencies downtown. All but a few large corporations have gone which affects everything including our cruddy airport which we had a hub.

@RGreggKeller Those census numbers are way off - they mark down population for every demolished building, even if it’s been vacant for years/decades. Detroit sued on this and posted a gain. Until the census corrects its data it’s a flawed count across US cities

The population of St. Louis (City) is now closer to 250,000, btw. Declined another 8% in recently-released Census numbers. Democrats have had exclusive political control of it for almost 80 years. I’m sure those two things are completely unrelated, though.
Scott Greer 6’2” IQ 187@ScottMGreer

In 1950, St. Louis was one of America's largest cities and an economic powerhouse. Today, its population has dwindled from its 50s high of roughly 850,000 to under 300,000 today. Hardly anyone wants to move there. Few cities symbolize American decline better than St. Louis.

@BeAccountable4u Yet the Republican in office is telling folks that he can’t run Medicare and is causing wars in Iran that spike gas prices. Honestly both political parties are a joke. It’s time for a new party to come in

@tdibianca @Ben_Baby And notice every new NFL stadium is now reducing capacity into the 60s just like the Dome. The new Arrowhead, Bills stadium, etc will be smaller than current. The Dome used to be a smaller venue compared to 70-80k seaters elsewhere. Today’s NFL it would fit in with the average.

Everybody within a 30-mile radius of downtown St. Louis needs to have an honest and open conversation as to why it’s that way. A major U.S. downtown should not look like that.

@RobProvince @chorizoandbeer @Ben_Baby Also the county actually needs it more than the city. The county has been in budget deficit for a few years, the city is at a surplus. Having city tax come to STL county would help with the budget

@RobProvince @chorizoandbeer @Ben_Baby Well a few years ago it was a complete merger meaning the city limits would stretch all the way to Chesterfield. People are way more against that. Adding STL city back to the county does not change anyone living outside of the city in the county.

@chorizoandbeer @RealRandyMan @Ben_Baby Cordish Company in partnership with the Gateway Arch Park Foundation. Cordish has built Ballpark Village and the surrounding office/residential tower in STL. They’ve built the similar scale power and light buildings in KC, Texas Live, the Battery in ATL, and a few others

@benduchek @aaron_renn Blame Ronald Reaganomics for loosening anti trust laws. It’s screwed over so many middle American cities by losing HQs through mergers in the last 30+ years. TWA was a casualty in this

@GeorgeJourneys @aaron_renn @razibkhan No. STL has many more Fortune 500s, and even KC lost a major HQ w/ sale of Centene to Oracle. Also STL just grew its international flights to Europe from 0 to 2 w/ Lufthansa and British Airways prior to any airport renovation. KC built a new airport; 0 international flights

@aaron_renn An example why the federal government under Reagan created the American dystopia today by loosening anti-trust laws. The merger boom happened and inland cities saw HQs get gobbled up by the coasts. TWA gobbled up by American. Now we have boom/bust cities vs a median for all

@bigga_house @jklein0004 @RaceSheets @awfulannouncing This is true of every city east of the Rockies not named NYC/Miami. 1950s baby boomers moved to the suburbs. Many Midwest cities attempted to capture the pop by expanding city limits. STL couldn’t as it split from county. STL city limits are 66 sq miles compared to 508 in county

@chorizoandbeer @Ben_Baby STL County actually just proposed a merger for the city to rejoin a month ago. Will it go anywhere not sure but there’s now been 2 merger efforts in 5 years. It will happen, mostly cuz rejoining the county doesn’t change the city limits and just consolidates a bunch of services

@chorizoandbeer @RealRandyMan @Ben_Baby Detroit is cutoff via highways, its downtown build growth is no different than STL. STL is building this along the arch grounds/river front from an old hotel site. How many Midwest cities are adding to their skylines?
