For all the shit Andrew Cuomo rightfully gets, the Tappan Zee replacement was started on schedule and finished pretty much on time and on budget.

@upstatefederlst It's a very low bar, but Andrew Cuomo was the best governor on transport infrastructure in NYS in a generation. He also got the Koskiouzko (I can't spell that) redone, and worked with Christie on the Goethals.

Most black people go through life without suffering violence at the hands of a single White person. All those racially-motivated attacks are in their heads. A plurality of Whites endure violence at the hands of blacks at least once in their lives. Some die.

@uckema You can also buy transit passes with pre tax money with most employers. I recall the PATH being effectively free years ago if you were a middle class commuter. I think counting the bulk purchase discount and the pre tax savings a fare was under $1 in the 2000s.

I literally spend more than that on gas. Sometimes I really do think New Yorkers have no appreciation of how much Transit saves money on that level.

As bad as NYC’s District Attorney’s are, they are no where near as radical as NY Judges are. Many judges like Police managers are also Politically appointed. Elections matter. The two rulings below are from the same judge, 2 very different sentences.

Relative to the Second Ave extension, the is a good idea. $5.5B for a major new line instead of $7.5B for two new stations close to existing stops. How much less would the Second Ave subway have cost if it was elevated and had modest stations? (We'll see if either line will open within a decade, and whether the final cost will be less than double the estimates.)

@chriswithans The deduction is a trap. Incurring debt because you get to write off interest is not a good idea. If you need to incur the debt and the write off facilitates your ability to do so, different story.

Someone called into the Dave Ramsey show asking if he should take out a mortgage on a first-time home when he already has $1.2 million in liquid investments. Married guy with kids from Pittsburgh. Makes $70,000; wife makes $55,000 a year. Wife wants to stay home with the kids. Looking at a $350,000 to $380,000 home in Eastern Pennsylvania. Both Dave and John Delony were insistent on paying cash for the new home. Caller would have to pay capital gains taxes on the investment sales (they inherited about $500,000 and grew it to $1.2 million) and would maybe lose out on the mortgage interest deduction. Caller seemed to know this too but Ramsey and John were adamant that he pay cash for the home to avoid having a mortgage.

I'd kill the bus lane on 495 and have a bypass tunnel connect Secaucus to the Lincoln Tunnel bypassing 495/helix. I'm just making the point that the "fund transit" people simply disregard enormous funded projects like this.
