On the call yesterday, @GregProctor asked how I got into selling premium. I fumbled a bit on the spot, but here’s the full story, my lightbulb moment and evolution. Once my portfolio ballooned past $3M in early 2021, I dove into early retirement research. Stumbled across Mr. Money Mustache, the 4% rule crowd, FIRE communities, and then the niche world of premium sellers. Consumed every YouTube video from the big names (think Tastytrade, Option Alpha—though I skipped their courses). Bought a few books too, but videos were my jam. From April 2021 to 2022, if it was about selling calls or puts, I watched it all. The real game-changer? Discovering high-IV stocks for covered calls. I breezed past the dividend king phase—too boring. By July 2021, right as Tesla hit record Q2 deliveries (over 200k vehicles) and Elon was hyping Full Self-Driving beta, I jumped into $TSLA shares. Owning 100+ shares, selling covered calls 10% OTM for 1-3% monthly premium? Hooked. Same on the put side: 20% OTM puts yielding 1-2%. It felt like a glitch in the matrix—especially with my poker background, where the odds were stacked in my favor. This was too good to be true, it worked through 2021’s bull run. I’ve stuck with it since, refining along the way. Learned there’s a time and place for every strategy—tell me the outcome, and I’ll pick the best option play. But predicting outcomes? That’s the hard part. I go with what lets me sleep at night. Had my share of sleepless nights (looking at you, 2022 drawdown amid inflation fears and Twitter saga). Now, I debrief wins and losses, hold myself accountable, and evolve. What’s worked for me: Discipline, high-vol plays like $TSLA, and balancing greed with risk. Warehouse lease, tons of coil, machines to make downspouts, elbows , etc. I would buy aluminum coil by truck load at a time in my past. For you to have any decent margins you need to manufacture the majority of your supply to customers. The machines aren’t cheap. And most require labor too as they’re not computer operated. I was a manufacturer in this industry for more than a decade. It’s just not that easy or I would have done it.

@REIAgent You tried? I know someone who just sold one of these businesses for pennies on the dollar. With my connections, I definitely could have gotten him a way better price, but he's a 63-year-old, old-timer type of guy.
