You could also look at it the other way: labeling someone a threat just because of how old they are or where they’re standing is a recipe for disaster. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time doesn't mean someone is hostile. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but from all I've ever seen, the worst thing a young man can do is to remain in his hometown when he's 18+. A properly-raised young man should be READY and EXCITED to leave the home the very second he is legally able to do so. And he shouldn't return until he's had a real "chapter" somewhere else. Ought to leave for at least a couple of years, come back with some savings, some life experience, etc. Needs to have "roughed it" for a while before coming back to the hometown. A majority of the most precious, soft, geriatric young men I know are the ones who failed to do this -- and behind most of these are parents who seemed to treat their boys more like fluffy house-pets than sturdy, adventurous young men. Interestingly, the military knows this, or at least the USCG did. They hated to give recruits a permanent duty station that was within 500mi of their hometown. Senior enlisted all universally said that whenever recruits got stationed near home, they lost their edge, got lazy, got into trouble, drifted back towards the comforts of momma's nest, etc etc. It may seem harsh but I have never seen any reason to believe differently on this question.

I'm boarding a flight between two Western Canadian cities with French-speaking populations of less than 4% each. And, by law, the entire procedure has to be bilingual. Until last week, it had never occurred to me that this policy may have helped innoculate Canadians for a whole host of other dumb government rituals that they know are pointless.

I have no idea why wide-brimmed hats are not more widely worn. I wear mine every day. It's wool, waterproof, keeps rain / snow out of my face, keeps the sun out of my eyes, holds up in wind. Very functional. Strange that I'm the only one wearing these hats in most places.
