It's called St Cuthbert's Day. We celebrated it every year at school. The flag bears his cross. He was so revered by King Æthelstan, the founder of our Kingdom, that the king made a pilgrimage to Durham to honour him. Renaming it "Durham Day" erases our history.

Happy Durham Day. The Durham flag is flying in New Palace Yard today to mark the county’s rich heritage. Durham City is one of the oldest constituencies in England.

@fleurmeston Born and brought up in the cradle of Christianity in England you know that it’s St Cuthbert’s day. As a native of Co Durham I larf at the soft Southern imbeciles - if only it wasn’t so serious …

@CommonsSpeaker St Cuthbert's Day is celebrated in Durham on March 20, marking the anniversary of the saint's death in 687 AD. While his veneration in Durham dates back to the late 11th century, it remains a significant contemporary celebration of local heritage

@CommonsSpeaker St Cuthbert's Day as it has been since at least 698 when his body received a new shrine. His veneration is much older than Parliament and should be treated with like respect. Calling today Durham Day is like calling St George's Day, England Day.

@CommonsSpeaker Happy Don't Mention Our History Day. These "oldest" things are rather problematical, are they not? You feel obliged to celebrate them, indeed you want to be connected with them, but you daren't say why. They just popped into existence on Multicultural Day Zero.

Is London actually a county, or is it something else entirely?
Many people assume London is a geographic county, but the conurbation sits within the counties of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.
In this video we explain how Greater London was created in 1965 for administrative purposes - and why the historic counties still define the geography.
Understanding the difference between historic counties and local administration helps explain how Britain’s county system really works.

@BBCArchive @Liklesis A brilliant nod to one of the great historical works - depicting events that unfolded in the wonderful counties of England, especially Sussex.
The Bayeux Tapestry continues to connect people to the places where that history happened.

#OnThisday in 1986 Blue Peter presenters Simon Groom and Janet Ellis showed off a 70-metre wooden replica of the Bayeux Tapestry made over eight years from solid oak. Taking up 22 wooden panels, the carving by Pierre Bataille was so big it didn’t fit into the Blue Peter studio.
