UPDATE: A German court has suspended the freezing of my wife’s accounts. It said it has “serious doubts” about the legality of the measure and a “massive interference” with her rights, dismissing claims I “control” her finances as normal family behaviour. A rare sigh of relief for us.

This is truly an appalling story. EU sanctions for reporting on German repression of Pro-Palestinian dissidents. His funds frozen. It is a crime in Germany carrying up to 12 years in jail to give him money - or to give food to his family.

German journalist Hüseyin Doğru has had no access to his bank accounts and has not been allowed to travel since the EU sanctioned him in May. The sanctions came following his reporting on the repression of pro-Palestinian activists. This week, a Frankfurt court upheld the blocking of his accounts. Doğru and his family now face homelessness. Journalists critical of Western foreign policy are increasingly subject to sanctions and legal harassment designed to make their lives impossible.

Today we honor Rachel Corrie, who was murdered by israeli occupation forces in Gaza 23 years ago on March 16, 2003 while attempting to block a bulldozer from demolishing a Palestinian family’s home in Rafah. She was 23 years old. In lesser known photographs of Rachel, taken just a month before she was killed, she is seen ripping and burning a hand-drawn American flag during a protest against the U.S. invasion of Iraq in Rafah on February 15, 2003. 23 years later, as the U.S. and zionist entity continue to carry out the ongoing genocide in Palestine from Gaza to the West Bank and rain down bombs on Iran and Lebanon, we know that if Rachel Corrie were still with us today, she would be struggling in defense of Palestine and resisting imperialism, zionism, and injustice in all its forms, with every ounce of her being. It is in this spirit that we join Palestinians and people of conscience around the world in honoring Corrie’s legacy as we continue to fight for Palestinian liberation and return within our lifetime. And it is in this spirit that we uplift her words, which continue to echo through space and time, a guiding light to all those who remember her name and her story. I think about this especially when I see orchards and greenhouses and fruit trees destroyed – just years of care and cultivation. I think about you and how long it takes to make things grow and what a labour of love it is. I really think, in a similar situation, most people would defend themselves as best they could. I think Uncle Craig would. I think probably Grandma would. I think I would.”

The message from the top is: women don't matter. This is not negligence but rather a silent enabling of every misbehaviour as long as someone is a DMK party loyalist. When the party rewards abusers and the state machinery punishes Dalits.. when they put women and children in the way of rape and murder.. we cannot look at it as a mere lapse. This impunity must end. If we are going to be inspired by Periyar and his ideals of women's freedom, we must start addressing thse concerns.
