@_johnbye The single most depressing film I've ever watched, but something every proponent of nuclear arms should be forced to watch (inaccuracies aside). The current case is less nuclear armed brinksmanship, more an overgrown toddler who's never been told no before.

If you're British and of a certain age, you probably remember watching / being traumatised by Threads, the BBC film about the impact of a nuclear war on the people of Sheffield. But do you remember how that war started?

Catholic schools were established by the hard work of Catholic families - why do aggressive secularists feel they have the right to seize them? Have the courage to do what we did. Establish your schools, like we did rather than cribbing.

Although 40pc of parents who took part in the survey say they would prefer if their child attended a multi-denominational school, 60pc said they would like their school to remain denominational. Commenting on the Department survey, David Quinn of The Iona Institute said: “Given how much the country has changed in the last few decades, it is actually surprising that a clear majority of parents still want their children to attend a denominational school. The 40pc who would prefer a multi-denominational education might even be an overestimate, because 60pc of parents did not take part in the survey. Those who want change might well be overrepresented among those who did so.” He continued: “In practice, divestment of a given school will only take place with the say-so of local parents. All parents are then likely to want a say, and support for multi-denominational schools could turn out to be a lot lower than 40pc in reality”. ENDS

60% wouldn't. Having attended one myself, I wouldn't, either. Schools need an ethos. You can rebel later if you don't like it.

@Muinchille Is it an "either/or" scenario? Having to look to any big book of fairytales for moral guidance is an indictment. You may as well credit the Greek pantheon for modern philosophy, doesn't mean I'm going to extol the virtues of Zeus.

@SMackIrish Much better than the teachers unions. There is no such thing as a non indoctrination education. The Catholic Church provides the best non state, most intellectually coherent moral framework, one that has guided Europe successfully for centuries, so it's that one.

@Muinchille I mean good on you for saying it out loud, but I'd rather children weren't indoctrinated in any sense. Bold move to trust the RCC as any kind of moral guiding light.

@SMackIrish Yeah, which is why I want the Church to do it, and not the State, or worse yet, the teachers' unions.

PS. Probably those most motivated to see a change voted. Turnout was 40pc. This might easily overestimate demand for change.

@DonegalBall @MichaelPTKelly It's a bit of that but I suspect apathy is the biggest factor. Not caring isn't exactly a ringing endorsement, mass attendance tells the real story.

@MichaelPTKelly Take away the communion dress and you’d be lucky to get 2% supporting RC schools in Ireland.

A more accurate headline would be ‘Almost two-thirds of parents support Catholic schools’ - but that wouldn’t suit the ideological agenda. Media literacy is one of the must important skills today - agenda-driven reports everywhere.

Actually, Rose. the majority of girls in my local all girls Catholic school are Muslim. They and their parents choose to attend because they value the single sex environment, the discipline, the structure, and the clear moral framework it provides. Many Muslim families prefer this over mixed or purely secular options for cultural and educational reasons. Forcing families into a one size fits all secular model funded by all taxpayers doesn't create neutrality, it just replaces one ethos with another. Catholic schools are already accommodating “diverse” students while keeping their character, and non Catholic families are choosing them in large numbers. Anything to say about that ?

Then they should pay for the choice. Every taxpayer in the state shouldn't have to pay for catholic schools.
