@TheGoldenBlazer Fair - I meant to say online** poker tournament, which obviously is 1/2/3 hours more severe on the east coast

A lifetime ago, in my very first job, I worked as a college admissions dean for my alma mater.
We always held admitted students’ visit weekend in April, and I was blown away to learn that the admission staff could predict the “yield” from that event (the share of visitors who’d enroll) based on the forecast.
☀️ = the class might be over-enrolled
☔️ = we might be going to the wait list
They were never wrong in their weather-based predictions.
I’ve always considered this to be a fascinating indicator about the whole college application endeavor.

Instead of reading The Atlantic article from today, I'd encourage you instead to check out the best gambling article of all time from 7 years ago @spanky @davehill77
And if you've never read it, you're in for a treat. I reread this once a year.

The ability to quickly reset and recover. From a bad interaction. From a bad day. From a missed workout. From a poor decision. You can start over whenever you want. You can't always control what happened, but you can control how long you carry it.

What’s a “boring” skill that secretly gives a man huge advantage in life?
English

@AllOrNubbin @1ReachGreatness Yeah I am assuming it similarly to you
English

@SamWarren31 @1ReachGreatness I’m not sure. I didn’t see it play out that way but I doubt it. I think you just get the remainder after vig and your opponent’s EV payout. So at that point, I think I’m basically just running out a turn and river vs the house for all or none of the remainder of the pot.
English

Question:
Has anyone ever been a big favorite in an all-in hand with cards to come, declined the cash out while the other person accepts the EV Cashout offer as a big underdog and then lost the hand to the player who took the EV?
What happens to the pot after the hand?
CoinPoker@CoinPoker_OFF
Do you use EV Cashout to protect your mental game or do you let the cards fall as they may?
English

@AllOrNubbin @1ReachGreatness Is it opposite in the other case? If you decline cashout EV option & your opponent accepts…board runs out 🧱 🧱 . You win full pot, and villian receives $160 EV (essentially out of site’s pocket?)
I’m assuming site is taking some rake/vig on their cashout offers to cover it?
English

@1ReachGreatness I played a $650 pot on Coin where my opponent was in rough shape with 2 cards to come. He takes EV of about $160. I decline my EV offer. Board runs out, he gets there and gets his $160. The other $500 just gets raked by Coin. Am I crazy for thinking that’s insane?

88 players are selected to the Pro Bowl each year. 1,696 players are on NFL rosters at the start of the season.
Only 5.2% of players make the Pro Bowl.
Zac Stevens@ZacStevensDNVR
Fascinating stat: Only 5% of players that change teams in free agency make the Pro Bowl the next year. The big signings in free agency aren't nearly as impactful and the money that's thrown around.
English

@sekrah @CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 Maybe! But I do find it ironic that the couldn’t win a single-elimination game in their conference tournament, but you seem to be convinced that they would’ve play a better game in the single-elimination MM round 1. Some days a good team just has a bad day, and vice versa!
English

@SamWarren31 @CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 There will always be good games later in the tournament. The first round magic is disappearing before our eyes.
English

@sekrah @CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 Maybe!
But last year also had Duke (the best team in the tourney?) losing to Houston in the final 4 in a close game. So there’s gonna be variance no matter what, best team isn’t gonna win every time (and that’s the beauty of the Madness!)
English

@SamWarren31 @CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 The gap between 10th and 100th was 15-16 points 5 years ago.
It's up to 22 now.
The tournament field needs completely retooled or we're going to get more dud first rounds like last year.
English

@sekrah @CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 It might! But doesn’t change the fact that the winner is just gonna have to win 6 single-elimination games in a row. You can’t take the high variance style out of March Madness no matter how ya slice it - you might as well lean into it!
English

@CrystariumsKeep @SamWarren31 @Blutman27 2022-23 was first real year of free transfer. You'll never get that again. It's going to look more and more like last year - more predictable with less chaos.
English

@SamWarren31 @ChadAHolloway @PokerNews @MikeHoltzPoker @phil_hellmuth They’d change it as well imo. Maybe $25k min cash
English

ICYMI, in recent episode of @PokerNews Podcast, @Bloodlow, @MikeHoltzPoker & I made poker predictions for 2026.
That includes me getting 7:1 @phil_hellmuth wins a bracelet & someone thinking WSOP main Event buy-in will go to $15K.

@sekrah @CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 And again - the irony being that the “better” team couldn’t win a single, high-variance conference tourney game, and now are missing their ticket to the OTHER high-variance tourney (March Madness) where you say they would’ve had more success if they got there 🤷♂️
English

@sekrah @CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 Yeah I mean idk, I guess every conference is different. Ivy League just has the top 4 teams play in a tourney, for example.
But kinda missing the point, IMO. Wanting a lower variance method to elect the teams to play a high variance tourney (ie, March Madness) is the irony
English

@sekrah @CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 The tournament itself is a single elimination tournament. The best team doesn’t win March Madness every year, and the fun of the tournament is rooting for the upsets. Lean into the variance!
English

@CrystariumsKeep @Blutman27 I want the best teams. You don't get them from 1 game samples sizes. Go learn something about probabilities and variance. You being a math illiterate is a you problem.
