@davemeltzerWON People don't give a shit about "real" they just want it to look like whatever wrestling they first became a fan with. It wasn't "realer" or "better", it's purely their nostalgia.

You have to remember that in the 90s all the stuff ten year olds now pretend looked real, to me, I was adult and knew what real looked like. Also I paid so much attention for generations and learned the lessons. I saw Stevens & Patterson and the older guys in the front row talked about how fake they looked and that Thesz and Nomellini was when it looked real.

@NotThatTomGreen I saw the toy of the ring and figured it was one of those deals where the toy line lasted longer elsewhere and they rebranded some goofy things. But oh no! A guy wearing a rubber mask instead of just finding a dude that kinda looked like Stallone? Come onnnnnn

My kayfabe cousin Scotland Green (who’s no longer on here) showed some of this on his Pro Wrestling Potluck stream last night. It might be the single weirdest wrestling show I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen so much weird wrestling.

I just discovered Rambo y sus Titanes, and I promise I will do everything in my power to get rights to it.

@davemeltzerWON There's no equal in fame/location to Big Daddy in the UK. MAYBE Santo in Mexico, but not really. Big Daddy was more than a wrestler there. He was a bona fide celebrity. The press tapped his phone lines to get gossip. The Queen talked about him. He was a cultural icon.

If you ask 100 people on the street to name the most famous pro wrestler in the UK today (there was a game show that actually did this just a few years ago), Big Daddy won in a landslide.

It was a beautiful home. Where Verne, I'm sure, wanted to retire. But when WWF began the national expansion, Verne/AWA, as well as many other territories, got hit hard. I arrived just a few years later in 87. Verne was already leveraging his property to keep hope and AWA alive. By 91 the handwriting was on the wall, and with Vernes' blessing, I left for WCW. Verne funded AWA for years out of his own pocket, so the wrestlers, production, and staff got paid. Had he been a “better businessman,” he would have closed the doors years earlier. Verne was a good businessman, but at his core, he was a fighter. He fought the expansion of the WWF and all that it meant; he fought the State of Minnesota, which, at the same time, was trying to take his home via eminent domain for a fraction of its market value. But he kept fighting. I will always be grateful for that fact.

I personally knew people who never watched pro wrestling again after WCW died and who think Twitter is the sound a bird makes. There have always been people who like pro wrestling but hate the way WWE presents it.

@bendreyfuss DVD was a psyop. I can’t stand the digital artifacts. It looks like shit. Nothing looks better than UHD, but even VHS legitimately looks better than dvd.

I purchased a standard DVD recently because the film wasn’t available online anywhere and also was never released on Blu-ray and it is crazy watching it on a large modern TV because the resolution is sooooooo bad. I remember when DVDs came out being like “this is the best!” Haha
