I am not a historian and can go wrong but from what I know, Poland has never revoked White Eagle orders of: Catherine II, butcher and enslaver of Poland; Hitler's Foreign Minister von Ribbentrop; Italy's Fascist dictator Mussolini; Hungarian Fascist leader Horthy. But Zelensky.

Since the 1997 Joint Declaration on Understanding and Unity, Ukrainian presidents and officials have repeatedly sought reconciliation with Poland: President Kuchma in 2003, President Yushchenko's reconciliation initiatives in 2006, President Poroshenko's "We forgive and ask for forgiveness" in 2014 and again in 2016, the 2016 open letter signed by former presidents Kravchuk and Yushchenko asking forgiveness for crimes and wrongs committed, and Speaker Stefanchuk's expression of sympathy and call for reconciliation in 2023. How many more times does Ukraine have to express regret, seek forgiveness and pursue reconciliation before it is considered enough? And Ukraine remains profoundly grateful to the Polish people for both their support at the beginning of the full-scale war and the support they continue to provide today.

Kiedyś, gdy przypinano je do piersi rodziców, były ważne i coś znaczyły. Będą w nim: * 🇫🇷 francuska Legia Honorowa – Wielki Krzyż (2023), * 🇨🇿 czeski Order Białego Lwa z Łańcuchem (2022), * 🇱🇹 litewski Order Witolda Wielkiego ze Złotym Łańcuchem (2022), * 🇫🇮 fiński Order Białej Róży Finlandii z Łańcuchem, * 🇵🇹 portugalski Order Wolności – Wielki Łańcuch (2023), * 🇱🇻 łotewski Order Viestursa I klasy (2022), * 🇪🇪 estoński Order Herbu Tallinna (2022), * 🇳🇱 holenderska nagroda International Four Freedoms Award, * 🇺🇸 amerykańska Golden Plate Award. Dziś wiadomo jedno: polski medal Polacy zabrali prezydentowi Ukrainy w środku wojny, w której Ukraińcy walczą o swoje istnienie i swoim życiem bronią m.in.

Probably no need to spell out the obvious: strikes on Belarus, on its oil refineries serving the Russian Armed Forces, or on equipment installed by Russians or servicing them, etc. — this isn't some completely far-fetched scenario. I also wouldn't rule out the possibility of various border-related events, in the course of which border territories get occupied with the aim of creating a buffer zone, pressuring Minsk, or tying down certain forces — also a quite realistic scenario at some point in the future. Lukashenko understands all of this perfectly well; over these decades he's demonstrated a high level of political intuition and instinct. At the same time, Belarus's population is only 9 million, where large masses have seen their government in a grave — everyone remembers very well the genuinely massive protests of 2020–21, which were suppressed and crushed by force, not dissipated on their own. With that kind of asset, you can't fight much or for long — at most a defensive posture, trying to keep the army loyal and under control. By providing its territory in 2022 for strikes and for the Russian army's hook-shaped advance on Kyiv, Belarus became, even formally, under international law, a co-participant state in the aggression. The fact that this wasn't talked about afterward isn't because it was forgotten, but because there were clearly more pressing matters than Minsk and what it was up to there. But if things start going badly for Russia (which the Kremlin itself is bringing closer by continuing to grind down its army, economy, and society) and it has to turn inward to its own affairs, Belarus could find itself largely without Moscow's protection. Lukashenko understands this perfectly well too. So it's sensible on his part — given Belarus's geographic position, its population, its vulnerabilities, and the vulnerabilities of his ruling family — to start a slow dialogue, and not just dialogue, but groundwork for the future: what he can offer, how to make up for 2022, and so on. I wouldn't even be surprised if such a dialogue is already happening behind the scenes, at the level of senior officials and diplomats. Belarus doesn't need a war, so it would be wise for Minsk to behave and, slowly, leisurely, in small steps, begin drifting away from Moscow as far as possible. Look at Armenia — it figured this out (and not only Armenia); now it's Belarus's turn. The future of this whole post-Soviet space will belong to Moscow only in the case of its victory (not a frozen conflict, but an actual victory) — in every other scenario, no, but instead many different new configurations and reshufflings open up.

Poland is conspicuously absent from European countries with whom Ukraine has defence cooperation agreements. These include the UK, Germany, 4 Nordics countries, and 3 Baltic countries, plus Canada. Ukraine has also signed defence agreements with 5 Gulf and Middle Eastern states. These countries are bringing (with Ukraine’s assistance) their militaries into the 21st century. Unlike these countries, Poland is not cooperating with Ukraine on a new European air defence system to replace the US patriot. Poland's MAGA President Nawrocki still has faith in Trump. Poland is also conspicuously absent from countries providing military aid to Ukraine (as seen at the just concluded G7 meeting). Poland (unlike Germany) is demanding payment from the EU for the transfer of (primarily Soviet) military equipment to Ukraine. Poland only shot down 4 out of 19 Russian drones during Russia’s last attack. I wish Poland good luck in combatting Russian aggression without US commitment to NATO and Ukrainian training, military technology and combat experience.

The Order of the White Eagle was not awarded just to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the history of these awardings is quite interesting. In the early 1770s, Poland's last king, Stanisław August Poniatowski, awarded the order to Alexander Suvorov - for his campaign against the Bar Confederation, that is, for suppressing Polish patriots. Catherine II was also a recipient, having received the order in 1787 - under her reign, Poland disappeared from the map; Grigory Potemkin was among the recipients as well. In 1831, after crushing the Polish uprising, Nicholas I incorporated the order into the imperial award system. The first recipients of the imperial Order of the White Eagle were Paskevich and Pahlen, honored for defeating those same Poles: Poland’s highest honor was taken away from Poland and re-awarded to those who had suppressed it. Then, in 1923, in an already independent Poland, Benito Mussolini received the order from President Stanisław Wojciechowski. In short, the list of recipients has included many names that today look rather awkward. By stripping President Zelenskyy of the order, President Nawrocki is not striking at Zelenskyy, but at the trust between our countries. Moreover, Poland's foreign policy is not led by him, but by Donald Tusk's government, which immediately moved to defuse the dispute, reminding everyone that only Moscow benefits from tensions between Poland and Ukraine. Two months ago, Viktor Orbán was also betting on the anti-Ukrainian card. His sixteen-year rule came to an end on April 12. True partnership is built not on ultimatums and revoked awards, but on dialogue - and previous Polish presidents understood this well. We will continue to defend ourselves, Europe, and Poland from the threat coming from the east, because we know that Nawrocki is not forever, while the Polish people will remain our friends and neighbors.
Anton Gerashchenko@Gerashchenko_en

"We regret that emotions got the better of Warsaw and forced Polish politicians to take unjustified, impulsive, and dismissive steps, not only against President Zelenskyy, but first and foremost against the Ukrainian state. The decision to strip the Ukrainian president of the Order of the White Eagle is a strategic mistake by the Polish president, from which only Moscow will benefit," said Foreign Minister Sybiha. The greatest rewards for the Ukrainian president are the respect of the Ukrainian military and the trust of Ukrainian citizens.

You've changed the subject . My question was whether the UPA or Bandera were officially recognized as Nazi, not whether some OUN or future UPA members collaborated with Germany at certain stages of the war. Collaboration by individuals or groups with Nazi Germany occurred in many occupied countries, including Poland, and does not by itself answer my original question. Since we've moved away from it, I'll leave the discussion here.

The President of Poland has stripped Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle — the country’s highest decoration “I want to emphasize that this decision is not directed against the Ukrainian people. It does not change the strategic direction of Poland’s security policy. We have supported and continue to support Ukraine”, Nawrocki said. The reason for stripping the award was Zelensky’s decision to name a Ukrainian Armed Forces special unit after “UPA heroes” (the Ukrainian Insurgent Army). In Poland, UPA fighters are accused of ethnic cleansing of Poles and war crimes. Zelensky received the Order of the White Eagle in 2023 from former Polish President Andrzej Duda “in recognition of his merits in strengthening relations between Poland and Ukraine, as well as his efforts in security and resilience in defending human rights.”

I understand that many Poles view the UPA very negatively and see glorifying it as deeply offensive. You're entitled to that opinion. We're discussing two different issues. Whether crimes committed by some members of the UPA should be condemned and whether the UPA or Bandera were officially recognized as Nazi are not the same question. There were disputes and restrictions regarding exhumations in previous years, but Ukraine has resumed cooperation and granted permissions for Polish search and exhumation works. In any case, that wasn't my question, and I still haven't received an answer: who and when officially recognized the UPA or Stepan Bandera as Nazi? You're right that Poland has spent billions of euros supporting Ukraine in total, and Ukraine is grateful for that support. However, the approximately €450 million figure refers specifically to part of the military aid that Poland expected to be reimbursed for through EU mechanisms. That aid was provided voluntarily by decisions of the Polish government and within international support frameworks. Poland is free to make political demands, but political demands do not automatically create a legal debt on Ukraine's part. Support voluntarily provided by an ally should not be retroactively reframed as an automatic debt.

Poland is free to seek reimbursement from the European Union if it believes it is entitled to one. The amount in question is about €450 million that Poland spent on military aid to Ukraine. The EU previously committed to compensating member states for at least part of such expenses. However, the weapons were transferred to Ukraine by decisions of the Polish government and within EU support mechanisms. Ukraine does not owe Poland money for that assistance.
