Rarely do I agree with Nawrocki, but taking the Order of the White Eagle away from Zelensky is the right decision. After all that PL has done for UKR, UKR should be more cautious when dealing with the historically sensitive issue of UPA, especially given its significance in PL.

Could you cite an official source stating that the UPA or Stepan Bandera were recognized as Nazi? Hitler, the Nazi Party, and several Nazi organizations were formally condemned and designated as criminal by the Nuremberg Tribunal. No equivalent ruling exists for the UPA or Bandera. Therefore, the analogy with naming a unit after Hitler is a false equivalence.

The President of Poland has stripped Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle — the country’s highest decoration “I want to emphasize that this decision is not directed against the Ukrainian people. It does not change the strategic direction of Poland’s security policy. We have supported and continue to support Ukraine”, Nawrocki said. The reason for stripping the award was Zelensky’s decision to name a Ukrainian Armed Forces special unit after “UPA heroes” (the Ukrainian Insurgent Army). In Poland, UPA fighters are accused of ethnic cleansing of Poles and war crimes. Zelensky received the Order of the White Eagle in 2023 from former Polish President Andrzej Duda “in recognition of his merits in strengthening relations between Poland and Ukraine, as well as his efforts in security and resilience in defending human rights.”
