@robertgraham would you consider secure software dev and pathing as outdated in general, or only for the IoT landscape?

We keep trying to fit IoT into outdated threat-models, such as obsession with secure software development and patching. This is so far mostly a theoretical threat. The practice threat is from vendors getting exploited, with hackers exploiting the vendor's access to your device.

I disagree. First of all, this was a media app on the desktop computer, the same threat model we've struggled with for 25 years. Second, IoT's threat model is completely different -- sometimes safer, sometimes more threatening.

Everyone polishes the turd to make the sale and has a general expectation that the risks are xfered, yet no one did any actual risk quantification.

@shad0wbits Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen great places too, also I’ve seen great places who have a subsidiary with poor hygiene that’s been added to their AD and it’s only discovered later. If risk could be evaluated well it’d be done more often, like in M&A and underwriting.

2023 Prediction: Cyber insurance will die because underwriters have no way to appropriately evaluate risk and deficiencies.
