@philclark79 Please correct me if I'm wrong. If I understand you right, it makes perfect sense to me. You are not saying that FDLR is a real threat. You are saying that FDLR is a real perceived threat (seen from the pov of the GoR). And that we must take this seriously.

Meanwhile the "FDLR is a spent force" argument fails to understand this isn't about its size. If a core group of Nazi orchestrators of the Holocaust fled to Poland & rearmed, no one would've said, "Oh but it's only a few of them." #FDLR's mere existence is the problem. 2/2

To those international actors who say #Rwanda exaggerates the threat of #FDLR: eliminate them. Call Rwanda's supposed bluff & eliminate FDLR. As long as FDLR remains, with the support of the Congolese state, Rwanda will continue to cite this as a major security threat. 1/2

Amin 'criticised Said’s view of empire from the Left and offered an alternative view, one based not on culture or discourse, but on a materialist understanding of capitalism & imperialism'. Said remained in NY while while Amin lived mostly in Africa, attempting to build /2

While there is much to be gained from reading Edward Said, I think it's very telling (about the class position of the majority of people in academia) that so much academic discussion the past year has revisited Said's work but less so Samir Amin's /1

@ElliottDGreen Agree that very few actually engage with his arguments. As for regional bias. I actually find his focus on S.E. Asia and Latin America really refreshing - rather than simply assume that nationalism started in Europe, as many do.

This is a great list of books on nationalism - with one exception. A brief thread on why Imagined Communities is one of the most overrated books in the field - and what other books should replace it on any reading list on the subject. 1/

In my graduate seminar this week we focus on nations and national states. In addition to rereading three great works from the 1980s (top row), I am engaging with three post-2000 books by the macrosociologist Andreas Wimmer (bottom row).

1/10 Excited to share our new paper in the Journal of Refugee Studies! Co-authored with Anja van Heelsum, we explain how fluctuations between hope and despair influence how individuals deal with risks during migration journeys: academic.oup.com/jrs/advance-ar… #MigrationStudies
