I graduated into a bad job mkt in 1992, but I got a great job on Wall St. My parents’ neighbor asked how I was. Told her I was working at Nomura Securities. She said, “that’s ok, things will get better.” This puzzled me. Later I found out she asked my mom if I had to carry a gun.

"We can't afford that right now." Six of the most difficult but important words to say. Most of the time people know what they can & can't afford, but they can be convinced otherwise by salespeople, guilt, a desire to please, etc. Stay strong. Your future self will thank you.

As a financial advisor or DIY investor, this may be the most important minute you spend today. Jonathan Kirshner & @kofinas lay out the difference between risk & uncertainty on @HiddenForcesPod Perhaps the most impactful thing I tell clients is, I don’t know, and we can’t know.

12 years ago, I was serving sushi at one of the most popular private parties during @TheMasters From the outside, it looked incredible. Famous guests. Beautiful setting. Energy everywhere. I remember spotting Wayne Gretzky. I heard Jeff Gordon was there too. Moments like that felt… big. ↓ But here’s what I remember more clearly: The exhaustion. The overnight prep. The constant pressure to deliver, perfectly, on someone else’s timeline. At the time, I had left Wall Street to run a sushi business. While it led to experiences like this, it also cost me my financial independence. If we're thinking ahead, we spend a lot of time talking about investments needing to match our lives, but we don’t talk enough about our biggest asset: Our ability to earn. Our human capital. Because here’s the truth: You can build a “great” career on paper... And still be completely mismatched with your life. The hours don’t fit The stress compounds The tradeoffs quietly pile up Until one day you realize: The asset funding your life… doesn’t actually support it. That’s what Asset Life Matching is really about. Not just aligning your portfolio with your timeline, but aligning your income, career, and energy with the life you actually want to live. The sushi business gave me some incredible stories. This was one of them. But I wouldn’t run that playbook again. Most people don’t need a better portfolio. They need better alignment.

I never thought I’d say it, but I love being a financial advisor. I still don’t love telling people I’m an advisor, but that’s another subject. But when I see all the bad takes about advisors, and by, “advisors,” in the world, it makes me want to pull the covers over my head.

One of the dumber things you hear lately, from a lot of supposedly non-dumb people, is “stocks and bonds are now trading positively correlated so you now desperately need this other investment that’s way way more correlated with stocks than are bonds.” Those investments are the typical. Privates (which are just equity, so it’s “you need more equity to diversify your equity”), buffer funds (which are just equity + cash minus some number), and crypto (which increasingly trades like equity, and is, you know, mostly nonsense, but even if you love it it’s currently bringing more equity exposure than bonds). My colleagues latest explaining:

@Tim_Denning @DylanCornelius What do you mean by, “bad idea,” and how long is the commute? What would you call being a farmer? Isn’t that work that farmers do? It can take more than 8-10 hours many days. Maybe the commute is shorter if they live on the farm. Is that a bad idea too?

In the speech that enraged Pete Hegseth and top Pentagon officials, Pope Leo XIV said: “A diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force.” “War is back in vogue, and a zeal for war is spreading. “The principle established after the Second World War, which prohibited nations from using force to violate the borders of others, has been completely undermined.”

The Pope is not “woke.” What you’re witnessing is a millennia of Catholic social teaching developed over countless encyclicals and the lifework of a vast cloud of witnesses to the love of Christ towards the whole world.

Had a call with a prospective client last week. They asked me two questions: 1) why did your last client contact you? 2) why did your last client leave? If you’re looking to hire a professional of any type, consider asking these.

@KenGardner11 As soon as Iran decided to hold out & threaten the strait, which was way better than 50% chance going in, they were going to get the better of the deal. They have the leverage. That's why previous presidents never tried this tomfoolery.

The more that I think about it, the more I am inclined to conclude that Iran got the better of this deal. The resolve for finishing the job can only weaken over the next two weeks. The Israelis are not happy and I doubt that the Gulf states are happy.
Ken Gardner@KenGardner11

As I see it: We get: an immediate reopening of the strait for two weeks. The Iran regime gets: a two week reprieve from the relentless beatdown that they were receiving. And two weeks to wage propaganda war, which is the only thing that has gone well for them. That's it.

If women just left the workforce in America, wages for men would skyrocket. This is not complex. They sold women a poison pill and everyone suffered because of it. What it will take to reverse the horrific results of feminism on the economy is for women to all quit and go home
Amy@amytheartist

These posts would be a lot more productive if they offered solutions for the fact that the average man makes $60K-$70K while the average 4-person household costs $100K. The math isn't mathing You're looking at a complex mess of wage stagnation, price inflation, and policy failures that built up over 40+ years Blaming feminism for everything is getting really juvenile

I think that's an oversimplification that only serves confirmation bias. To me, it's more like, gee, I went to a shadetree surgeon & he started amputating my arm before I got a chance to explain I was there to have a mole removed. Halfway through the choice is to stop & repair the arm or just cut it off. The much better option would be to try and save the arm, not follow through because damage has been done.

This is true, which is all the more reason why we can't stop now. It is also true that they have always had this ability to blackmail the global economy, which is itself another reason why we can't stop now.

As with its nuclear program, Iran can not unlearnt new knowledge. And Tehran has learnt lots in the last 4 weeks. Iran assumed the Strait of Hormuz gave it a lever. But its effectiveness was unproven, and it didn’t know the response of the US and oil markets. Now, it knows.

I still bring my 7th grader breakfast before school every morning. Sometimes I feel like I’m pampering him or acting like some kind of servant. A couple weeks ago I had an early Saturday morning errand to run. Left the house when he was still asleep.
