loved every minute of the games in Canada. portugal v Croatia is game of the tourney so far. stop judging these on economic output and judge it on cultural impact and global reputation.

Toronto's FIFA World Cup hosting duties showed very little economic gain for the city according to data - FIFA cashed out as Canada's hosting gig came with a price tag of $1 billion and Toronto taxpayers dished out $380 million to host six games cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

🇨🇻 Sidny Lopes Carbal's journey over the last 18 months is absolutely insane. In 2024, he was playing regional football for Rot-Weiß Erfurt in Germany before signing for Germany third division side Viktoria Köln. In 2025, after becoming a key part of the club's newfound defensive stability he signed for CF Estrela Amadora in Portugal's Primeira Liga. Just 6 months later, after registering 6 goals and 4 assists, Benfica snapped him up and he joined on 1st January of this year - a World Cup season. And his rise couldn't have gone much better. On his first start for Benfica, he scored against his former club Estrela Amadora and walked away with the Man of the Match award. Then everything unravelled. After the incident in which Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Vinícius Jr., Carbal asked Vinícius for his shirt after the game. From that moment on, he was frozen out by Benfica and before this World Cup, he was sold to Trabzonspor in a £6M move. Now, on the biggest stage in football, he's announced himself to the world. Carbal scored his country's sensational equaliser against the reigning world champions Argentina to make it 2-2 - a goal that will be talked about for years and one that could genuinely end up being the goal of the 2026 World Cup. From Germany's third tier to one of football's biggest moments in just 18 months. What a story.

This guy has the counter point to my argument that Marsch isn't up to the job. He brings a lot of the things needed to build the program up before moving on from him, and that's a decent argument. We need stability and he seems to bring that. #canmnt
AJ 🇨🇦@jae2so

Goes beyond being a coach imo. We need a central figure temporarily to embody the direction of the MNT as it develops. At some point the program will be stable enough that we will move on from Marsch. But we need to get the national game to that point before that happens.

I’m one of the biggest fans of Jonathan David but ever since he transferred over to Juventus, he has not been the same. I really don’t know where he goes from here to regain his confidence and good form. #Canmnt

@dilcps we had like 31 shots against qatar, those all count as chances if i'm not mistaken....Ruben Amorim also had united getting a lot of chances, they finished 15th or something. Carrick came in and it wasn't a problem anymore. Chances and quality chances can come down to coaching.

@TFC5ever Hate to say it but really think it’s on the attacking personnel We are the team that produces among the most chances at this World Cup & this has never been an issue under Jesse Marsch numbers-wise We just crash out on the final third constantly it’s frustrating

As for the CanMNT attack question: That’s legit been a weekly narrative for years It’s a tiresome convo to have because it’s too obvious that Canada just needs better attackers Difference is that more eyes are seeing how much Canada lack finishing
dedo 🇨🇦🇯🇴 (REBUILD)@dilcps

Scrolling through my tl & I really think I’m right in not overly getting invested in “what went wrong” Because there’s a lot of misdirected anger being thrown just for the sake of getting angry Particularly towards Alphonso Davies… injuries happen in sports get over it

@Asnow119 And then technically more than friendlies, but unfortunately not significantly much more competitive, would be the Gold Cup next year.

I need Canada at Copa 2028. I also need Canada to find a 1 touch striker. Some one with the ability to just smash a volley through the net.

@Sean_C2 @dilcps I think it was 2 sitters. David had a bad tournament, but we also didn't score against cote d ivoire, tunisia, colombia, ecuador, mexico, and for a lot of the copa america where the teams were significantly weaker.

People dissecting this Canada defeat like it was a really winnable match we somehow screwed up -- obsessing over a couple players. We play this 10 times, WITH Davies and an in-form David, and everyone playing out of their skin, and still probably win 2 or 3 out of 10? (1/2)

@TFC5ever @MikeMartignago Then someone else. Anyone who was healthy and available. Why are we treating Davies as if he’s better than Messi. He’s the only one I’d give the treatment we gave Davies to.

New Canadian soccer expert: Let’s say you leave Davies off the World Cup squad. Who’s replacing him and is that player contributing to Canada’s first ever World Cup knockout win? I’ll hang up and listen

@TheJMB81 @MikeMartignago He was a top 3 left back in the world before his ACL injury that he's only had half a season to get over. He has been the #1 leftback in the world and he is 25, he is a world best 11 player. They haven't had that in North America since Hugo Sanchez for Mexico.

@TFC5ever @MikeMartignago Stupid decision making. Should have taken not injured players. “Literally our messi” isn’t even top 10 left backs in the world, Bayern did fine without him, only played 13 games this season. He played in copa america 2024 and we still lacked finish in that tourney same issues.
