@SillyValleyBro @Jason @RoKhanna Want Elon and Bezos to privatize firefighters? Local cops? Whose house do you think they show up to first if you haven’t subscribed to their new EMS+ tier?

1. Strange bedfellows 2. If you spend a year auditing California and violently eliminating fraud @RoKhanna, you would have the high ground in this discussion. .... but no one wants to pour more water into the leaky bucket that is government spending.
Ro Khanna@RoKhanna

In that case, are you willing to pay a modest trillionaire & billionaire tax to pay for checks to working families? We could start with the modest $3000 check @BernieSanders and I have proposed for families under $150,000?

@imnotac0p @Jason @RoKhanna Analogies break down under scrutiny. Hole in bucket - easy fix. “Eliminate fraud and waste before we give you another dime” doesn’t get fixed with Flextape. And while we wait, rich get richer while healthcare, education, and infrastructure crumble.

@atrupar @DoorDashImpact Let’s not forget that generous tips are central to the business model of DoorDash, Uber, and many other gig economy platforms since their dashers are *by design* not employees and therefore do not qualify for benefits… You know…like health insurance… …for cancer.

LLMs cracked language. But what about the other half of your brain? We’ve only solved half of AGI - the creative one that understands language. The data and math side? Still unsolved. BUT according to Jeremy Fraenkel, we are very close to changing that… cc @fraenkelj

There's a lot of cope about the NYT only thriving because of recipes and games. The question is: Why was NYT able to build out these non-news revenue streams? It's because the newspaper has an incredible brand, such that it could be extensible.

Here's the prediction: About 1 hour after market close, Trump will announce some kind of "framework of a deal" (which he will claim is with this shadowy "new" regime of negotiators, making the claim completely unverifiable).

@Scobleizer @wholemars Maybe we vote in Democrats at the national level, Republicans at the local level, mix at the state level. Republicans push pro-growth issues that let local, *relatively* uniform communities thrive. Democrats better navigate the diverse national issues that impact everyone.

@wholemars It is infuriating. Yet we keep voting Democrats in. When will voters wake up? I did. I used to be just like them voting the same idiots in every time.

@Jason To be clear: this is a pattern I’ve seen from many execs/political leaders (I’ve worked closely with both). Many cannot admit/accept that THEY are the problem. They think they have bad messengers, so they start trying to “go direct” and/or firing underlings. He’s the problem.

Easy solution to stopping socialism and AI anxiety: get half of those of us lucky enough to be in the top 1% to commit to a new "giving pledge" where they give 5% of their stock/net worth to @InvestAmerica24 accounts --- like @SusanDell and @MichaelDell did. ... as opposed to giving your money to the dysfunctional. non-profit industrial complex. tell me why I'm wrong in the comments in a thoughtful way

@Jason Oh no! Who could’ve predicted this!?!? Certainly seems like the “smartest” people in tech are either: 1) corrupt and feathering their own beds 2) not actually that smart. Corrupt or dumb - which is it?

@twistartups Wait - did Jason get that information from the creators of Potter “going direct?” Or did he get it from a journalist who used their sources and skills to report news that’s now feeding his podcast?

HBO is spending a rumored $5.6 BILLION on this new Harry Potter series but Jason says… it’s actually a smart bet. The “Potter” show reportedly costs $100 million PER EPISODE. That’s around 20x more costly than Season 1 of “Game of Thrones”! How could HBO Max subscriptions alone possibly make that money back. On TWiST, @Jason notes that the lifetime value of a hardcore Harry Potter fan is well above $1000. If this show creates 5 million die hard “Potter” fanatics, it earns that money back just from HBO Max subscriptions, let alone theme park visits, merch, new books, video games, and beyond. Dig deep into the economics of IP and how a big investment of front could pay off over generations of fandom on TWiST. cc: @Jason, @Lons

What’s the “lie” Mike? Wired has gained subscribers and the NYT is thriving. Independent, factual journalism is not “vicious propaganda” — Silicon Valley is awash with money but short on accountability; reporters are obligated to ask questions of those who’d rather ignore them.
Mike Solana@micsolana

you should absolutely not engage with “journalists” committed to ideology over real interest in your work. wired is run by vicious propagandists. you should not talk to them, you should not pay them, and when ppl like theo lie about their work you should blacklist them as well.

@Scobleizer @WIRED @NYT @Jason Yep - also, Jason's advice will cost founders great opportunities (not just for direct coverage but also to be invited to events, discussed on podcasts/socials because of headlines), connections to some of the smartest/most connected people in tech, and valuable feedback.

@TallKP @WIRED @NYT @Jason Yeah, I would take customers however they can come to you. Generally Jason is right but if you find the right outlet/journalist they can really help you find customers. Or, at least, give you an article to help your pitch deck.

As someone who has worked alongside journalists from @wired, @NYT and many other publications, I have to say this is patently braindead: 1) @jason would not be where he is today without the breathless coverage of his investments (did you know he was early in Uber? 🧵
@jason@Jason

1. No one cares about this ultra woke, biased version of @WIRED 2. And even fewer people care about the NYT’s take on WIRED FOUNDERS: DON’T ENGAGE WITH THE MEDIA — GO DIRECT.

So true, and I'm in the business of interviewing entrepreneurs, just like you. Going direct is the best way. By far. That is why I setup my lists of more than 10,000 founders: x.com/scobleizer/lis… so I can see all the entrepreneurs going direct and have the ability to add value and get them more views.

Founders: take my advice... do not talk to the press, go direct and do long-form podcasts. Wired and the NYT are as biased as Fox News and MSNOW these days This is a function of their need to pander to one side to survive, be it through $ 3-a-month subs or rage-baiting ad-based stories. Attacking tech gets views (see Karen Swisher)... and views get advertisers (paradoxically, tech advertisers support the folks trashing tech! let that sink in!) Founders: If you talk to the NYT or WIRED, they will trash and misrepresent you 95% of the time in order to get more subscribers and page views It is what it is...
Theo Baker@tab_delete

.@Jason says this but Wired added 200k new paid subscriptions last year and the NYT is healthier than ever. “Don’t engage with the media” is an inherently silly take. Journalism is an essential public interest. Founders evading scrutiny is how fraud pops up again and again…
