We’ll give you better schools, better jobs, the right to vote easier, and social status over Black people. In return, you support our system and don’t team up with Black people against us.” That deal worked extremely well. The result was that poor whites stayed loyal to the rich instead of fighting them. The rich stayed rich. Poor whites stayed poor but felt superior. Black people stayed at the very bottom and got hit the hardest. So yes — class and power were the core. The people with money stayed in power by using race as the main tool to divide the poor.
