Interesting that there are hundreds of inscriptions in scripts like Safaitic but comparatively far fewer in Paleo-Arabic. Does this imply that literacy was less widespread, even if certain scribal schools with standardized practices existed?
Rashiq Shahzad@Rashiq__Shahzad

The historical narrative of pre-Islamic Arabia as a completely "illiterate" society is widely considered a myth by modern historians and epigraphers. Abundant physical, linguistic, and historical evidence proves that writing and literacy were widely practiced.

@iwiltrytobegood @jricole @dmontetheno1 He is the one who has made claims about Muhammad supposedly being a "Prophet of Peace." I am simply pointing out that his interpretations rely on unproven assumptions. Most secular scholars who have common sense and a critical mind don't make such claims because they lack agendas

@iwiltrytobegood @jricole @dmontetheno1 His interpretations of the "data" (or rather selective "data") are not assumption-free. I already explained here: x.com/TeluguFilmFile…. Prof. Cole makes a lot of logical leaps using several assumptions that are not independent of his political leanings, which he is open about.
TeluguFilmFile@TeluguFilmFile

@jricole @dmontetheno1 It may very well be the case that Muhammad did engage in some acts of ṣulḥ and aṣlaḥa, but that doesn't mean that he at other times didn't engage in other activities that went against those principles of peace/settlement/reconciliation. An unbiased picture is far more nuanced

@TeluguFilmFile @jricole @dmontetheno1 Why is it cringe-worthy that a scholar looks at the data and derives a conclusion that the Prophet is peaceful? What’s the issue here and how has his biases came to affect such a thesis? What precise piece of data is telling you “academics who say this stuff are cringe”?

@iwiltrytobegood @jricole @dmontetheno1 I may not have the expertise to judge the whole field, but I do know that most secular scholars are unbiased enough that they don't elevate Muhammad to the status of a "Prophet of Peace." I'll tell you what's actually cringe-worthy: an "academic" calling Muhammad that in his book

@TeluguFilmFile @jricole @dmontetheno1 You’re quite literally too incompetent to judge the field or his works. You don’t know any Arabic, much less the literature or methodology regarding Quranic studies nor do you understand the late antique mileu. You’re unqualified and your confident ignorance is cringe-worthy.

@jricole @dmontetheno1 Prof. Cole, I am not going to take your class, so it doesn't really matter what grade you would give me on anything. But what I do know is that an unbiased scholar would not call Muhammad a "Prophet of Peace." That's an exaggeration that requires us to make many many assumptions.

@jricole @dmontetheno1 Prof. Cole, it is good that you are unbiased regarding certain topics. I appreciate that, but I hope you also apply the same critical thinking and methodology for other topics as well, particularly those involving Muhammad, instead of falsely painting him as a "Prophet of Peace."

friend, paleo-Arabic only really emerged in around 500 CE, so there are only a century and a half worth of inscriptions in it before Umayyads, as opposed to likely 600 years of Safaitic. Plus the 'epigraphic habit' declined everywhere in Near East after 400 CE for unknown reasons. Safaitic inscriptions were graffiti by Bedouin so not really 'literacy.' Paleo-Arabic inscriptions seem to be by settled people who were part of a literate system in which orthographic rules were actively taught. In most pre-modern societies historians think literacy was around 5% before printing, but the society could still be a literate one if it underpinned institutions and practices. Some workers and peasants could puzzle out public signs. No systematic search for paleo-Arabic inscriptions has anyway been done. So you can't readily come to this conclusion. See ch 5 of my Rethinking the Qur'an in Late Antiquity

@The_Equationist @Ugrashravas I think for most people something like x.com/TeluguFilmFile… would suffice to understand how ridiculous that "decipherment" is.
TeluguFilmFile@TeluguFilmFile

@starhopperrr @yajnadevam Some of S. K. Venkatesan's "decipherments" are indeed funny, but do you know what's funnier? Any of the jokes produced by the Sanskrit "decipherer"! See x.com/kingkongfalls/…, x.com/kingkongfalls/…, x.com/kingkongfalls/…, x.com/kingkongfalls/…, & x.com/TeluguFilmFile….

Hope @The_Equationist doesn't fall for these distractions and remains steadfast in pressing yd to show one (1) Sanskrit corpus with >95% a/ā
yajnadevam@yajnadevam

Many people are half-educated about frequencies. The comparanda presented in the QT show that he doesn't know how frequencies vary by text length, corpus size, inscription size, metrical vs inscriptional etc. Read this: yajnadevam.substack.com/p/phoneme-freq… Questions for @the_equationist who is presenting that he knows a thing or two about this: 1. What choice on the author's part is the biggest contributor to vowel frequency? 2. Surely, a bunch of seals wont have the same frequency as a metrical verse. What quantitative tests allow us to check if the ranges are within expectation?

@yajnadevam @TheButterThief I was harsher toward your work (although never toward you personally, at least not intentionally) than I should have been. So maybe this is my way of trying to undo things at least partially. I apologize for the times you may have felt I crossed the line.

Essentially this guy has no chops to discuss the subject, so he makes an oblique ad hominem attack, insinuating all manner of things. Here he pretends to misunderstand an illustrative example of why peer review is not a truth machine, as a claim of personal equivalence, illustrating his low level of comprehension.

@yajnadevam If you really are so confident of the truth of your work, then why are you getting triggered by the statements of people who, in your view, may be trolls? They do not believe that your work is correct; it's pointless for you to try to change their/our minds. Don't be triggered!!!
