OK stupid question. TSA limits liquids, gels and aerosols that passengers can bring through airport security. But there’s no requirement around items being room temperature. What if you just… froze stuff?

We have updated our VoePass ATR 72 blog post with a *true airspeed* graph. flightradar24.com/blog/voepass-a… Please note that the *ground speed* data from this aircraft’s transponder was consistently erroneous, both on the last flight as well as on previous flights.

A cheap, simple piece of equipment that prevents damage to airplanes… …but occasionally destroys them, killing many, almost put Boeing out of business & could have altered the course of WWII They’re called “Gust Locks” Airplanes are built to interact w/ the wind; it’s air flowing over the wings that gives it lift. Changing the way the air flows is what makes the airplane controllable When not in use, the airplane still reacts to the wind – with a strong enough wind, even a parked airplane will come off the ground (usually only small ones, but it’s theoretically possible for a big one to do so, too). This is why parked, small airplanes are chained down if stored outside Aside from the risk of literally blowing away, the airplane’s control surfaces tend to move around in windy conditions. They may do so dramatically, banging from one limit to the next in rapid succession, over & over, which will eventually cause damage. Even on big jets, it’s not unusual for the elevators to get blown around while parked…though it’s usually from another jet’s exhaust hitting the tail. On the 737, the yoke may suddenly come back into your lap; we’ll turn one of the electric hydraulic pumps back on if this starts happening (I’ve never seen a gust lock on a 737…cue Airbus comments about a computer that prevents this 😉) A simple solution: lock the control surfaces in place, ideally in a neutral position, or possibly w/ a slight bias toward pushing the nose down How you accomplish this varies. Some airplanes use external gust locks, which fit into the gaps of control surfaces, preventing movement. On others, some kind of pin is installed in the yoke (see below); the holes for it are only aligned in that neutral position. Still others will simply wrap the seat belt around the yoke, providing at least some protection A simple, cheap, elegant solution – at least, until humans get involved The problem w/ a gust lock is that pilots sometimes forget to remove them. Whether caused by a rushing pilot or just not seeing them, attempting a takeoff with the gust lock installed has happened surprisingly often Perhaps the most cited example is of the first B-17 ever produced. On a test flight in 1935, that first (& at the time, only) B-17 accelerated down the runway & became airborne. It climbed steeply into the sky, stalled & crashed, killing two of five crew. An investigation concluded they’d left the gust lock (which had only recently been developed) installed & had no control over the airplane’s surfaces (aside: Boeing had bet the company – spending all available cash – on this prototype for an Army Air Corps contract; without an airplane, the contract was awarded to Douglas’ vastly inferior B-18 & Boeing was all but bankrupt. Boeing ultimately survived & nearly 13,000 B-17s were ordered, but that’s a different story) In the aftermath of the crash, some concluded aircraft were becoming too complex to safely fly, as a pilot could not be expected to remember everything required. Boeing’s engineers disagreed; to solve the problem, they developed the first aircraft “checklists” – an idea that was quickly adopted worldwide So, in some small part, a gust lock had not only nearly finished Boeing & left the Army w/ a terrible bomber, which may have changed the course of WWII, but led to the use of checklists that we’re so familiar with today Gust lock accidents continued afterward, though, as pilots rushed through or disregarded checklists. Many were killed, among them notables such as Swedish Prince Gustaf Adolf, actress Grace Moore & Sir Edmund Hillary’s wife & daughter Experienced pilots are not immune; in 2021, a missed gust lock killed the man often called “The Real Life Maverick” or “Real Top Gun”, Captain (USN, Ret) Dale “Snort” Snodgrass, a legendary F-14 pilot Some modern aircraft now have software which recognizes an engaged gust lock & won’t allow certain actions, but most don’t That’s all my space – hope you enjoyed!

@skinnyprinsess It depends on where in the US. When I lived in NJ people had no problem driving an hour for dinner. I live in Vegas now, any more than a 15 minute drive is considered far.

Most people don't realize how many young people are extremely addicted to CharacterAI. Users go crazy in the Reddit when servers go down. They get 250M+ visits/mo and ~20M monthly users, largely in the US. Most impressively, they see ~2B queries a day, 20% of Google Search!!

Another remix video going viral on IG, while @tiktok_us throttles it because their AI deemed it “unoriginal”. It was doing numbers for 20 minutes straight before it got pulled from the algorithm. TikTok you gotta figure this out, 3rd time it’s happened to me.

@JTGenter @ATXJetsetter @Clear Precisely why I didn’t renew clear when it expired last month. Only ever came in handy twice out of 54 flights last year. Not worth it.

@ATXJetsetter @Clear *if the CLEAR line is significantly shorter. Between understaffing of "ambassadors" and a constantly changing process, I've found the CLEAR process takes a lot longer than TSA PreCheck.

Hmm. According to the @Clear agent at ATL this afternoon, all CLEAR Plus members have to verify their identity with TSA even after verifying through the Clear kiosk (and no this wasn't a random selection). If that's the new policy, what's the point of having CLEAR anymore? 🤔
