How does life evolve to adapt to modern cities? Out now in @ScienceMagazine, my PhD work with @LindyMcBr uncovers the ancient origin of the “London Underground mosquito” – one of the most iconic examples of urban adaptation. 🧵(1/n) science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Would a person with a mechanical engineering and generative deisgn background be a good fit? I'm currently making generative design for complex systems like compliant mechanisms and assemblies. I'm hoping to model and synthesize biological systems soon and am applying to PhD positions this fall (no true wetlab experience yet, unfortunately). I know about hydrogels, bioprinting, IPSCs, and microfluidics and I have a strong backround in numberical methods, FEA, and AI for images/3D designs (as well as system design as I worked as a fluid systems engineer at SpaceX prior to my current work).

This work shows how materials and microbes can cooperate to create a new class of autonomous drug depots. Huge thanks to everyone in the Mooney Lab and collaborators at @wyssinstitute and @Harvard who made this possible!

Encapsulated bacteria act as living sensors - detecting infection and releasing therapy on demand. We used this system to functionalize prosthetic implants and autonomously treat infections in mice.

My postdoc work is now on bioRxiv! We combined engineered bacteria with hydrogels to create implantable living materials. These living materials safely confine microbes while enabling them to sense disease and release drugs on demand. 🔗 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

I'm thrilled to share that I’ve officially launched my lab this week at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Ophthalmology/UPMC Vision Institute @Pitt_OPH ! I’m incredibly grateful for the mentorship and support I’ve received throughout my journey from @davidrliu , @ESontheimerLab , and Chonghui Cheng during my postdoctoral and graduate training. I’ve also been very fortunate to collaborate with outstanding scientists like Joe Hacia, Cat Lutz, Nancy Braverman, and Job Dekker, whose partnership has been truly invaluable. A heartfelt thank you to all my past colleagues and those I’ve met during the faculty interview process. The mission of the Gao Lab is to uncover fundamental biological mechanisms and translate these discoveries into transformative therapies that advance human health. We are hiring at all levels! If you're passionate about driving the future of genomic medicine, I’d love to hear from you. Learn more about my work: lnkd.in/eZpAgYD9 and please reach out to me via danielgao@pitt.edu More updates coming soon—stay tuned!
