日系人部隊のアメリカ人将校が「なんでこいつら味のついてない白米ばかり喜んで食ってるんだ？」と理解に苦しんだなんて話を見たが。 味のほぼ無い米やパンを塩辛い料理と一緒に口に入れる「口内調味」は主に東アジア独特の食文化であり。西洋人はほぼやらない。故に「バーベキューに炊き立てご飯が欲しい」「美味しいジャンバラヤがあるよ！」とまるで噛み合わなくなる。 西洋人に日本食ばかり与えると。おかずや味噌汁を先に食べてしまい。もてあました白米に塩や醤油をかけて食べるので健康に良いどころか塩分過多になるらしい。 逆に明治の日本人が1皿づつ供される西洋料理に困惑し。「どうしておかずしか出さない？米が無いぞ」と豚カツ定食やハンバーグ定食を爆誕させてしまう。 この話をすると「西洋人もスープに固いパンを浸したり。豆やマッシュポテトを肉のソースに浸すぞ？」とよく言われる。 これは恐らく「口内調味」ではなく「皿の上での調味」だろう。インド系の料理も米やナンをカレーやスープにまず浸すのでたぶん「口内調味」ではない。＞RT

@wrr02175771 I was raised with heavy Japanese/Asian influence, so rice and tea were unusually common for me. But white rice is not a normal dish here. Southern cooking in the US does have rice very often, but it’s not in a traditional Oriental way.

@kureakurea01 This is an excellent take. I love Japanese renditions of Euro orchestral music. But it’s different. You take Western beauty and technically alter it, yet also it becomes spiritually different. I can always hear when Western orchestral tracks were composed by a Japanese.

面白いのは、彼らが反応しているのが、厳密には日本そのものではなく、「アメリカ文化を丁寧に扱う日本」に対してだということです。KFCは本来アメリカ発の大衆チェーンなのに、日本ではそれが妙に清潔で、妙に安定していて、妙にちゃんとおいしそうに見える。するとアメリカ側は、自国の記号を海外で見ているはずなのに、なぜかそこに理想のアメリカを見つけてしまう。だから「家の近くのアメリカ」「アメリカがそこにはある」という冗談が、ただのネタを越えて少し切実になる。 これはかなり現代的な現象だと思う。 人はもう、自国の理念を自国の中でだけ確認するとは限らない。むしろ外部に、より整った形で保存されている自国性を見て、安心したり、感動したりする。 アメリカ人が日本のKFCや、日本に点在するアメリカっぽさに熱狂するのは、異文化に驚いているというより、自国で失われた手触りを、他国で回収しているからだ。 しかもそこにあるのは、高尚な政治理念ではない。自由、友情、親しみ、ジャンクフード、チェーン店、冗談、雑な愛情表現。つまり国家の公式文書には載らないが、たしかに国民感情を支えていた生活のアメリカだ。 彼らは日本に対して敬意を示しているようでいて、同時に自分たちがかつて信じていたアメリカの陽気さや無邪気さを、日本の風景の中に見つけて興奮している。 だからコメント欄の「God bless the Japanese people」や「I have no notes on Japan」や「Protect them at any cost」は、誇張されたネットミームのように見えて、実はかなり本音に近い。 政治の文脈ではなく、文化の受容のされ方において、「こちらのものを、こんなふうに好いてくれるのか」という感動がある。 人は自分を批評されるより、自分の好きだったものを愛してもらえた時のほうが、ずっと深く心を開く。 一方で、コメントの中には「アメリカのKFCはもうそんなに良くない」「日本のほうがうまそう」という自虐も混じっている。 ここも重要だ。 いま起きているのは単なる日米友好ではなく、アメリカ側の自己認識の揺れでもある。 自国のチェーンより海外店舗のほうが美しく見える。自国の雑さや劣化を、日本の几帳面さが“補完”してしまう。 すると日本は、アメリカ文化の消費者ではなく、ある種の保存修復者のように見えてくる。 この構図は、じつはかなり日本的でもある。 日本は昔から、外来文化をそのままコピーするのではなく、一度受け止めて、再配置して、磨き上げて、別の完成度にして返すことがある。 洋食も、ジーンズも、ジャズも、喫茶店文化もそうだった。今回のKFCも同じで、日本はアメリカを崇拝しているわけではない。 ただ、自分たちなりの秩序と美意識の中に置き直している。その結果、アメリカ人が見ても「あれ、こっちの本家より愛されてないか？」となる。 ここでさらに興味深いのは、この現象が政治を通らずに起きていることだ。 国家間では意見が割れる。歴史認識でも、安全保障でも、経済でも、人はすぐ身構える。 けれどKFCのチキンひとつで、「日本人最高」「移住したい」「このミーム好き」「友達になってる」と感情が溶ける。 もちろん全部が本気ではない。 でも、こういう軽い冗談の往復の中でしか育たない親しさもある。 SNSはしばしば憎悪を増幅するが、ときどきこうして好意の連鎖も爆発的に広げる。 そしてたぶん、この流れがここまで愛された理由は、日本がアメリカを論じたのではなく、食べたからだ。思想ではなく味覚で返し、批評ではなく生活で受け止めた。 だから相手も防御せずに笑える。 文化交流がうまくいくときは、たいてい正論の交換ではなく、こういう少し抜けた入口から始まる。家の近くのKFCを近所のアメリカと呼んでしまう、その雑でかわいい比喩の中に、外交官の文章よりもよほど健全な感情がある。 私が言いたいのは、これは単なるミームではないということだ。 アメリカ人は日本のKFCを見て笑っているのではない。 そこに、自分たちの文化がまだ誰かに愛され、しかも本国より丁寧に扱われている光景を見て、少し救われている。 国はときどき、自分の美点を自分の中では見失う。 でも他国の食卓の上に、それがちゃんと残っていることがある。 だからこれはチキンの話でありながら、どこかで「文化はまだ仲直りできる」という話でもある。

@m_takewaka History is a hobby of mine, and I love the history of great and "noble" warriors -- Hideyoshi, El Cid (Spain), Wyatt Earp (US Cowboy), etc. Of course, none of them were perfect ... but all of them show examples of things to admire.

@rc51_nono_sp2 I have traveled across the world, seen many beautiful places. But there is no sunset like there is here in Texas. Nothing comparable. Curiously, this is not quite true for sunrises. Some places have better sunrises, but not sunsets.

I reached out to many overseas travel agencies that cater to visitors to Japan, asking whether they would consider including our café as part of their Japan sightseeing itineraries. Unfortunately, every single agency gave essentially the same response: “Why would anyone come all the way to Japan just to visit a British-style maid café? At the very least, you should be serving Japanese tea. Hahaha…” So please, especially if you’re from the UK or another country abroad, come visit our café.
