Senate Votes to Open Boundary Waters Watershed to Mining - a Setback for Fish, Wildlife, and Sporting Heritage. The Boundary Waters watershed - more than 1,100 lakes, cold connected water, lake trout, walleye, smallmouth bass, moose, deer, and waterfowl - is one of the most intact freshwater systems in the country. Today the Senate voted to lift a 20-year mineral withdrawal protecting that system, using the Congressional Review Act in a way that has no precedent in public land management. TRCP's position has been consistent: where development poses a high likelihood of irreversible harm to fisheries, wildlife habitat, and the sporting heritage tied to both, long-term stewardship is the prudent course. This vote is a major setback, but it is not the end of the road. Stay engaged with our partners @sportsmenbwca 👉sportsmenbwca.org

Big Game Migration Conservation Priority: The Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program To help reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions, $350 million in federal funding became available in 2022 across America through the Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program to help with the research and construction of wildlife crossing infrastructure such as over and underpasses and fencing that help funnel wildlife across highways safely. Several states have developed their own funding sources to leverage these federal funds. The TRCP and partners are working to make this temporary federal program permanent. These investments are broadly supported and will make our roadways safer for motorists and wildlife alike. Learn more about the Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program and TRCP’s other migration corridor conservation priorities at our newly updated webpage. trcp.org/wildlife-corri…

The Chesapeake Bay historically supported an abundance of wildlife within a diverse ecological community. An abundance of blue crabs, oysters, menhaden, rockfish, ospreys, and many other wildlife species have made this region a home and a valued destination for as long as humans have occupied the continent. The Bay region has long supported a diverse culture, a productive food resource, and an outdoor recreation paradise. But over time, Bay productivity has declined. While still a diverse ecosystem, the overall health of the Chesapeake has been affected by human impacts that have degraded water quality. Development, contaminated stormwater, runoff from agricultural operations, abandoned mines, and deforestation have all contributed to declines in fish and wildlife populations via water quality impacts. trcp.org/2026/04/03/how…

Ospreys that nest in the Chesapeake Bay – the world’s largest breeding ground for the iconic raptors – are currently facing a population crisis, with chick survival rates at historic lows. Remy Moncrieffe, marine conservation policy manager for the National Audubon Society, says a lack of science regarding the menhaden population in the Bay is one of the primary challenges facing fisheries managers and those concerned about an osprey population decline. “Menhaden are one of the biggest indicators of ecosystem health for us, especially in the Chesapeake Bay. The access to menhaden, the lack of menhaden, the abundance of menhaden, these all have really direct impacts on the environment.” Watch the full series on YouTube! 👉 youtube.com/playlist?list=… 📹: @GaelinGOExplore / @HamptonsDrone / @fishguyphotos

Foreign-owned industrial fishing companies in the Gulf may soon face new limits and Louisiana lawmakers are leading the charge. Four menhaden management bills cleared a House committee Wednesday with strong backing from the recreational fishing and conservation community. They seek to prohibit industrial menhaden fishing in water less than 22 feet to limit redfish bycatch, open harvest data to the public, require tracking devices on pogy boats, and set penalties for fishing within protected buffers. TRCP thanks the bill sponsors, Reps. Joe Orgeron, Jerome Zeringue, and Vinny Cox, and will continue to push for passage of the bills into law. 📸: Louisiana Sea Grant

On March 24, the Idaho legislature took official steps to acknowledge the importance of wildlife migration conservation and habitat connectivity for iconic species such as deer, elk, moose, and pronghorn, while also committing to making the state’s highways safer for motorists and wildlife alike. By conserving these habitats, Idaho can ensure future generations will be able to enjoy these herds and a multitude of other game and non-game species. Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 124 establishes a path to support investing in wildlife crossing infrastructure—underpasses, overpasses, and exclusionary fencing—to keep big game animals off the pavement. Idaho has roughly a thousand wildlife-vehicle collisions annually, and according to the Federal Highway Administration, the estimated cost of these accidents is roughly $150 million. New Resource Alert Iconic species such as elk, deer, and pronghorn require intact habitat to complete their daily movements, as well as seasonal migrations between summer and winter ranges to meet their lifecycle needs. In recent years, big game migration conservation has taken center stage at the intersection of science, policy, and management. As weather patterns change and human development increases, conserving big game migration corridors has never been more important. By conserving these habitats, we ensure future generations will be able to enjoy these herds and a multitude of other game and non-game species.
