Last night, a friend mentioned how strange he found it that two Muslims would target a Muslim mayor's residence. I had to explain that that's not what happened. But it's proof of what a good job outlets like CNN have done obfuscating the truth. Together with Mayor Mamdani, the liberal media has worked assiduously to make it seem like Mamdani—rather than a group of anti-Mamdani non-violent protestors—was the real victim of Saturday's terrorism. To repeat: This is real courage. Not some faux college screaming. Not chasing ICE vehicles. This is the real thing, the first among virtues as courage is the one of which all others depend. @POTUS has promised to help them and it’s on its way. Not since Solidarity has world seen civilians with this sort of bravery stand against totalitarians.

With my people in #Iran, these days… On the #3rd day of student protests, videos from #AmirkabirUniversity of Technology - Tehran Polytechnic and the #UniversityofTehran show continued confrontations on campus, including reports of tensions reaching dormitories and academic buildings. Similar gatherings and unrest have also been reported at @SharifUniversity, #UniversityofIsfahan, and #AlzahraUniversity. When multiple universities across the country raise their voices at the same time, it reflects a moment that goes far beyond one campus. #Iran #Students #AllEyesOnIran #Education

This is maddening and should bring @HarmeetKDhillon to campus immediately. It is viewpoint discrimination and clearly an unconstitutional act by the state institution. The only way to shut down the “heckler’s veto” Is to make legal action against such state actors immediate and tough.

Bari Weiss was just canceled as the speaker at UCLA Burkle Center’s annual Daniel Pearl Memorial guest lecture. It is the latest example of viewpoint intolerance, led by faculty members who did not want students to hear one of the most impactful figures in journalism...

The progressive activists who captured the humanities at US universities did more than destroy trust in universities. Their ideas made the Democratic Party lose presidential elections it might have won by landslides.

Van Jones: “If progressives have a politics that says all White people are racist, all men are toxic, and all billionaires are evil, it’s kinda hard to keep them on your side. If you’re chasing people out of the party, you can’t be mad when they leave.”

Next Wednesday, February 18, at 5pm, in Merten Hall 1204, join the George Mason University Department of Economics, in person or online, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of The Wealth of Nations. Our four speakers, Donald Boudreaux, Peter J. Boettke, Mark Koyama, and Daniel B. Klein, all from our department, illustrate that GMU Econ is the best place on the planet to learn Smithian economics. More information here, and please join us after the event for a catered reception: economics.gmu.edu/events/17688 Webinar link here; the event will be recorded as well: gmu.zoom.us/j/97823968391 This event is made possible by the generous financial support of the George Mason University Department of Economics and me.

I started watching the new series on ABA. I loved the ABA as a kid, and in particular the match ups between Dr J and David Thompson. However the series starts with an injustice to NBA basketball in 1960s and 1970s. None of those ABA teams could have beat the Celtics or the Knicks at that time. No guard in ABA matched Earl Monroe or Walt Frazier, Nate Archibald, let alone Jerry West or Oscar Robinson, or big men like Wilt or Kareem. I find it shameful that the producers but also sadly Dr J and George Gervin perpetuate the false impression that NBA was slow, unathletic, and lacked skill and flash. I will watch to end, but this is wrong and someone will have to produce a film showing just how high level of play was in NBA as well as ABA.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

Columbia U. hires a new president, Jennifer Mnookin. This is sort of good news for conservatives. She was at least moderately tough on the Gaza protestors when she was president of U. Wisc. And she at least claims to be a strong supporter of free speech and institutional neutrality (the idea that universities shouldn't get involved in politics, including making virtue signals at every single silly leftwing cause-de-jour). Maybe even better news: Columbia considered John Manning and Daniel Diermeier. Manning is the provost at Harvard and former law dean. His judicial philosophy is basically Scalia-ist. I'd call him a right-leaning moderate. Diermeier is the chancellor of Vanderbilt. He stood up to the far-left radicals when they tried to take over Vanderbilt's main administration building, and he may be the country's leading advocate of institutional neutrality. Three years ago there would have been absolutely no way Columbia would consider a Manning or Diermeier for its president. So maybe things are changing. On the other hand, it appears that Manning and Diermeier withdrew their names from consideration. Did they conclude that Columbia is a lost cause? freebeacon.com/campus/breakin…

Progressive magazine The Nation just published an extremely disturbing article arguing against the imprisonment of rapists. The writer was brutally gang raped by a pack of men for 6 hours but refused to repot the crime to police because she believes in the abolition of all police and prisons. The writer barely stops to consider how her decision to keep these men on the street endangers other women and the rest of society. “The simple answer to the question of why I never reported the rape is that I believe in the abolition of police and prisons. The less simple, less articulate answer is that to pursue prosecuting and potentially incarcerating other people is inconceivable to me, even when they have hurt me more than I could have ever believed possible. Because of this, I can only vocalize what I want in negative and inherently impossible terms: that all I want is for it to never have happened. The prospect of being a participant in other peoples’ incarceration is as alien to me as anything could be, to the point that I can only conceive of it in childish terms—how silly and strange it would be to have a group of people incarcerated at my expense when doing so would do nothing to fix the damage they have already so thoroughly done. There’s a lot wrapped up in this feeling that is hard to explain or justify. My empathy for these men is perverse, its recipients undeserving. Maybe it simply stems from the fact that (as I’ve been told) I’ve always been too nice, too apologetic, which is a characteristic itself I feel tired of apologizing for. But I don’t want to ruin the lives of my rapists and I don’t know if they have children. The only thing I want is for them to never have done what they did to me—and nothing, including sending them to prison, will ever change that reality. Outside of abolitionist frameworks, the suffering and pain caused by rape and other violent crimes become fodder for mass incarceration. When grief is so easily transformed into the justification for carceral (and genocidal) aims, it can feel as if publicly grieving for rape is an irresponsible or outright dangerous thing to do.” Rarely have I encountered such a perfect example of suicidal empathy. I feel sorry for the author because they are clearly mentally disturbed but the reality is that this ideological position is extremely selfish and puts so many innocent people at risk.

“Get your f—king guns and stop these f—king people” A Minnesota Antifa member-turned-social media influencer and online recruiter named Kyle Wagner is urging his comrades to take up arms to kill agents of the federal government. His recruitment videos are on @instagram, which has become popular for the far-left in organizing violence due to its reach with mainstream liberals. Wagner has branded himself on the neck with the gang tattoo of the Antifa “Iron Front” logo, similar to how neo-Nazis brand themselves with fascist symbols.
