Last week at @UCBerkeley MDes with Jodi Forlizzi, Wendy Ju, and Terry Winograd, I joined a conversation on what it actually means to design trustworthy, legible agents for physical environments. The question that kept coming up: when an agent is sensing and acting in the real world, how do the people around it know what it's doing and why? In digital systems that's mostly a UI problem. In physical systems, it comes down to safety and trust. An output an operator can't interpret is an output they can't act on.
