If you followed Jacques Journey @thehundymeridian — that was me. A Tragically Hip reference that exactly zero people got (Jacques Cartier, right this way…). Now I’m just Jason and moving on. New handle. Same opinions. Sharper focus. Let me tell you where I actually stand. 🧵🇨🇦

You’ll often have cases where a right wing candidate is described as “liberal lite” because they are professional and soft spoken in style, but someone who is ACTUALLY not particularly conservative but talks like an asshole/has a more aggressive style is a “real conservative”.

This is an ongoing pattern in how some on the right deal with Donald Trump. Rather than acknowledge that he is a person with responsibility and agency, and rather than acknowledge that he has threatened Canada, started the trade conflict (Canada already had the ‘tariff-free deal’ the Conservatives claim is ‘their plan’ until Trump unilaterally blew it up), rather than acknowledge that Trump is hostile to the concept of free trade itself, and rather than acknowledge that reducing our dependence on trade with the U.S. is the only way reduce our susceptibility to economic coercion, some on the pro-MAGA Canadian right prefer instead to blame it all on Canada. This is psychological weakness, weakness borne out of a desire to submit to Trump within an authoritarian dominance hierarchy, and anger towards those – like the non-MAGA majority in Canada – who see Trump for what he is and who refuse to submit to his irrational demands.

Well said ⬇️ Country before party — exactly right.
Jason Kenney 🇨🇦🇺🇦🇮🇱@jkenney

The cynicism & hyper partisanship on this site can be exhausting. I see criticism of Conservatives like @erinotoole & @lraitt for agreeing to serve on the Prime Minister’s Canada-US relations advisory panel. Some say it represents “patronage.” To be clear, membership on advisory panels like this are not paid positions. Sometimes they will offer modest per diems for longer meetings requiring travel. But there is no material reward for participating in work like this. If anything it represents an opportunity cost for busy people who give up paid work or billable time in order to participate. In other words, it’s not patronage. Cynics, brace yourself: perhaps what motivates people to set aside partisanship and do voluntary work like this is an authentic sense of duty, of public service that puts country ahead of party. To the partisans who think it’s disloyal to accept a role like this: please remember that severely normal Canadians do not see the world through your hyper partisan lens. They expect Canadians to work together across party lines to help defend the country from external threats, like Donald Trump’s aggression. (Remember Stephen Harper appointing John Manley to lead the advisory panel on the Afghan military deployment; or appointing Gary Doer Ambassador to the US.) Finally, to Conservatives: one of the most unattractive feature of the contemporary left is its tendency to politicize absolutely everything. Don’t repeat their error. Conservatism is not a rigid ideological doctrine requiring loyalty tests and the demonization of our political adversaries.

@AGMacDougall Exactly this - why are some on the right so allergic to working in a non-partisan way? There’s conservative folks, heck even a BQ member on this panel. And all the business and industry represented. Tribe over everything else I guess? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t know which of my American friends needs to hear this, but the US is NOT fully energy independent when it comes to crude oil. Your government is misleading you. You are a “NET EXPORTER” of total petroleum mainly because you produce and EXPORT what you don’t use !!! Which is huge amounts of light sweet crude from shale…while still importing massive volumes of heavy sour crude …the kind most of your complex refineries are designed to process and that you DON’T produce enough of domestically… sorry but it’s the truth. 🫡🪒

On a per-person basis, Canada is attracting more foreign investment than any other G7 country - roughly double the next closest and our highest level in 18 years. More investment means more jobs, more growth, and more opportunity.

Only Canada could hitch a ride aboard the Americans' new moon rocket and then immediately bitch about how their U.S. ties are a weakness. We're the nation-state equivalent of Jaden Smith.

@TristinHopper I never said Canada got there alone or even has the capacity to go to the moon alone. I said we paid our way - it wasn’t a free ride.

@TrueBearingCA Did Canada build the SLS, Jason? It's a great arm, but we ain't getting anywhere near the moon without the Americans.

@CooperPhaedrus @TristinHopper Thanks for confirming it. Canada paid its way with world class technology NASA chose not to build itself. That’s not a favour — that’s a transaction. Which is exactly what I said.

@TrueBearingCA @TristinHopper Because the USA lacked the capability to develop their own articulated space arm, this was some uniquely Canadian technology and talent at work. Yeah right. We bought our way onto the shuttle program and ISS by giving them a Canadarm.

@LockJaw55 @TristinHopper NASA didn’t build it because Canada’s space robotics expertise is world class and they needed it. That’s not charity — that’s why Canada was at the table. Going it alone works out great for the US — just ask them how Iran’s going.

You’re an American Trumper so lying comes easy. Quick fact check: — Trump raised tariffs on Canada to Great Depression levels — Threatened annexation ~70 times using “economic force” — Bank of Canada confirmed US tariff uncertainty drove Canada’s GDP contraction — 75% of Canadians now view the US unfavourably — up from 41% pre-Trump. Your hero’s policies are working. — Thousands of Canadian jobs directly tied to US tariffs Over-dependence on a partner actively trying to destabilize you IS a weakness. Any portfolio manager will tell you to limit risk by diversifying. And Carney’s doing just that. Funny how much energy Trump (and you apparently) spends on a country that apparently has nothing America wants.

Not attacking us? — 25% tariffs on Canadian goods — Threatened annexation ~70 times — Called two PMs “Governor” multiple times — Explicitly said he’d use “economic force” to bring about annexation — Threatened to close the Gordie Howe Bridge — 74% of Canadians now view the US unfavourably — up from 41% before Trump Economic warfare is still warfare.

@John88962453 @TristinHopper NATO and NASA are two completely different entities — Canada paid $2 billion for that seat and built technology NASA couldn’t get anywhere else.
