For many years, I misconceived "mental fitness" to be a term exclusive to elite athletes striving for optimal performance. How wrong I was. I believe most people think about mental health as being mentally unwell. The truth is we all have mental health, right? It's either good or not good. When thinking about a mental wellbeing scale between 1 and 10, where 10 is as good as you can possibly be, around the 3 mark is the line demarcating mental health from illness. So, someone who scores '4' is far from thriving and just surviving, which is not enough. Mental fitness is far more aspirational, it's about experiencing a better life through enhanced thought patterns, feelings, and behaviors. Typically the average person scores between 4 and 6. This means life feels tough without much progress or a sense of fulfillment. You might feel lost, stagnant, or like something's missing even though you're not mentally ill. The key to leading a more fulfilling life with more moments of joy lies in raising your score towards an '8' or more. I really can't express how fantastic it feels! Explaining it would be akin to explaining the sensations of lovemaking to someone who's never experienced it. My journey toward achieving strong mental fitness has truly transformed my life. I now have better sleep quality, rarely get sick (I haven't had COVID yet!), higher motivation, and a much stronger relationship with my wife, all while accomplishing more in less time at work than ever before. Small issues no longer affect me; I don't react and don't take things personally. It really feels like having a superpower. Interested in taking your journey toward attaining higher levels of mental fitness? Start by simply being curious. Delve into things like positive psychology, neuroscience, and the science of happiness, through books, podcasts, or Youtube! By learning about our mind and putting our learnings into practice, we rewrite our narrative - prioritizing our mind over traditional wellness structures that tend to focus on physical health. Reflect on where you fall within this scale (between 1-10), then take steps to improve your score. If you're anything like me, when you recognize even a small positive shift in your mindset, it really feels like the veils have been lifted to a whole new world and way of being. Have you ever felt like your life is on autopilot? Leaving little room for growth or spontaneity? It's similar to being stuck on a hamster wheel without realizing it - we go around in circles every day without really questioning why. For years I found myself in this same pattern until I finally decided to step off that hamster wheel, and the transformation has been incredible, rather than feeling trapped. My life was suddenly filled with a wonderful sense of being awake to a world I'd been blind to. Perhaps you know the feeling too. Have you become accustomed to living like a hamster on a wheel? If so, it's worth taking a moment to consider whether your mindset and status quo routines are really serving you. What might be possible if you were willing to break free from old habits and beliefs? Choosing to step off the wheel is not about avoiding responsibility - it's about taking ownership of our lives and recognizing that we have choices to carve a different pathway. By being courageous and challenging our own assumptions. We create space for positive change, growth, and new opportunities. The world doesn't seem so bleak, and you have greater energy and optimism. Your mental fitness has multiple inputs: 1) positive thinking, 2) being present, 3) autonomy, 4) self-image, 5) a sense of purpose, 6) personal growth, 7) positive relationships, 8) vitality. You have to work on each of these areas to keep yourself fully charged.
