So you want to use the "unprovoked" defense for World War II, but 9/11 doesn't count for Iraq and Afghanistan? WWI and WWII resulted in Weak Foreign Policy. All of the Wars were including the years of planning 9/11 under the Clinton administration. I'm no Bush fan either, he definitely screwed the pooch on a lot of things, but 9/11 was a CIVILIAN target and emotions were very high. One reason again, 99.8% Democrats voted YES regardless of who was POTUS. They are always on board for War. The greatest military in history has: Fought Korea to a draw. Lost to Vietnamese farmers. Spent 20 years in Afghanistan before being expelled by men in sandals. Created ISIS in Iraq. And is currently stuck in week five of Iran with a closed strait and no exit strategy. Greatest ever. No question.

@AryJeay There are videos of Iranians dead. It's both a loss and a win for Iran. 50/50. A loss because the US did enter their country, and if the US is to be believed, suffered no casualties and saved their pilots, but a win for Iran because the US did suffer heavy equipment losses.

A pyrrhic victory for the US. But no loss for Iran, just a loss in opportunity. Iran shot down a F-15 and had the opportunity to capture the pilots alive, but finding a needle in a haystack is not an easy job. Especially when the US keeps bombing those who got close to the pilot. Nevertheless, despite the heavy losses of the US: • One destroyed A-10, one damaged A-10 • Several damaged Black Hawks • Damaged F-16 • 2 destroyed C-130 aircrafts • one or more MH-6 chopper destroyed • Destroyed F-15 • Shot down MQ-9 drone They still managed to extract their pilot, which in itself is an achievement, but faced many losses as a result. In theory, Iran lost nothing here, but only achieved hits and kills. The only loss was a loss of opportunity. Though make no mistake, the war is still not finished and we may see more interesting turn of events.

The "leave no man behind" doctrine is actually a strategic weakness disguised as a virtue. Name one other military on earth that destroys 6 aircraft and fights a ground battle inside a sovereign nation to recover one pilot. You can't. Because no other military confuses tactical sentimentality with strategic logic. Soldiers serve the mission. The mission doesn't serve the soldier. The US has now established that Iran can shoot down an F-15, then watch America spend $300M and expose Delta Force trying to prove it didn't happen. That's not military doctrine. That's politics with weapons. A military that cannot accept the risk of loss cannot win wars. The US hasn't won one since 1945.
