How should we understand Kim Jong Un's approach to North Korea's economy? In a forthcoming paper, @benjaminkatzeff & I argue that Kim is pursuing a form of market Leninism: institutionalization of (some) market activity combined with tight ideological-political control. 1/n

As it becomes difficult to go to / do research in #China, I fear many int'l scholars, esp next generation, will abandon China studies. This can't be a good for China as mutual understanding becomes more difficult to achieve. @yuenyuenang @MichaelSzonyi @FairbankCenter @munkschool
