Introducing the newest addition to our (@ArchForumUganda) portfolio.  The proposed Center for Distance Learning at Makerere University, funded by the Republic of Korea through KOICA, is a purpose-designed multi-storey facility that combines durable reinforced-concrete construction with energyconscious architectural strategies to support Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL). The design uses the site’s existing levels to create two lower ground floors and an upper ground floor, minimizing earthworks and integrating parking, plant rooms and service areas at lower levels.  The reinforced concrete framed superstructure with concrete block infill and steel roof provides robust, lowmaintenance building fabric; external facades are treated with recessed elements and balconies to provide sunshading and depth, reducing solar gain while allowing wide openings for natural daylight and crossventilation. Internally the building is arranged for flexible teaching, administration and support functions: clearly sized floortofloor heights (3.6 m) and enhanced ventilation for larger rooms enable comfortable learning spaces; each room is specified with adequate audio systems and provisions for mechanical ventilation where required.  Services design emphasizes energy and water efficiency: highperformance mechanical installations, smart water fittings, and integrated fire detection/suppression systems are included.  External hard and soft landscaping, pedestrian walkways and a 10 m buffer from existing roads improve campus integration, reduce noise and dust, and provide outdoor student spaces and canteen areas.   The facility directly aims to strengthen Makerere’s ODeLcapacity by providing dedicated, purpose-built physical infrastructure for content production, live/recorded lectures, faculty training and student support. Specified audio systems, designated AV rooms and reliable services (power, HVAC, communications provisions noted in the equipment and services schedule) enable high-quality synchronous and asynchronous delivery. The layout supports administrative workflows, digital resource storage, and ICT equipment hosting while the lowerlevel plant and water storage/pump rooms ensure resilient building operations.   By combining sustainable passive design features, purpose-built AV and support spaces, and campus-sensitive siting, the Centre will expand Makerere’s reach, improve the quality and consistency of remote course delivery, and provide a scalable hub for ODeL pedagogy, staff capacity building and community engagement across Uganda and the region.

We have lost a star! 💔 Esteri Tebandeke was more than an artist — she was a force who told stories, built spaces, and inspired a generation. Her legacy will live on in every creative she touched. Rest in power Esteri. 🕊️

Tomorrow, I will be serving as Session Chair at the @UNABSEC_UG CEO Forum focused on enhancing local contractors’ competitiveness in Uganda’s Oil & Gas sector. This is an important moment for reflection. We often frame the challenge as a capacity issue. But experience shows that the real constraint is structural. Financial systems, compliance frameworks, and partnership models play a decisive role in determining whether local firms scale or remain peripheral. The discussion must therefore move beyond technical capacity and interrogate whether the broader system is aligned to support indigenous enterprise growth. I look forward to contributing to a candid and forward-looking conversation.

When Art Changes a Child’s Story I first encountered Faces Up through a beautiful act of generosity. At the time, a friend of mine, then Marketing Manager at Latitude Zero, reached out looking for an organization to receive the proceeds from an art event called Ebirungi. The artists had committed to donate 10% of their sales, and Latitude wanted it to go to a meaningful cause. Working with my colleague Elizabeth, who leads our Kuonyesha Art Fund, she recommended @FacesUpUganda And so began the connection. At the Ebirungi event, I remember listening to @kalulemma, the Founder and CEO, speak so passionately about their work. It stayed with me. Faces Up works with children in low-income communities, using art as a tool for expression, healing, and possibility. The children create art, and through its sale, contribute toward their schooling. But it is so much more than that. Through art, they are finding voice. They are building confidence. They are learning empathy, community, and even entrepreneurship. I fell in love with the work, the ethos, and the people behind it. I promised myself I would visit. When I finally did, I spent an afternoon painting with the children. The joy, the laughter and the seriousness of that day remain one of my most memorable experiences. This year, I had the added joy of meeting Emmanuel’s mother, the woman who believed in and supported his dream from the very beginning. Hearing her speak gave even deeper meaning to the journey of Faces Up. I have watched this organization grow and bloom. And now, they are at a pivotal moment. They need a bigger space so they can reach more children, nurture more talent, and extend this beautiful work even further. To make this possible, they are raising $5,000, which will be matched. Deadline: 31st March If you have ever believed in the power of art… If you have ever seen what happens when a child is given a chance… This is one of those moments to act. 👉🏾 Donate here: lnkd.in/dP7A2mwY And truly, why stop at $5,000? Let’s help them go beyond. Let’s help them reach even more children. We can do this. Together. #ArtForChange #InvestInChildren #CollectiveGiving
