The Koboko- Yumbe-Moyo road is undergoing an upgrade from gravel to bituminous with 30% road works completed so far. Today in Moyo, we carried out a road safety sensitisation reaching boda riders, school communities, and market vendors. Each group engaged at different times and locations, each with unique realities, but all connected by one thing: shared risk on our roads. From riders navigating daily traffic, to children making their journeys to and from school, to vendors operating close to busy roads. Our discussions highlighted that while environments may differ, the dangers remain the same: speeding, limited awareness, unsafe road use, and changing road conditions. With the ongoing road upgrades on the Koboko-Yumbe-Moyo road, it is even more important that communities understand what these changes mean, i.e., how to use the improved road infrastructure safely and how to protect the road furniture, themselves and others in this transition period. Road safety is not just for one group,it is a shared responsibility. Every rider, every pedestrian, every trader, every road user has a role to play.

In the morning, we held a toolbox talk with several ZhongMei construction workers. We stressed the importance of vehicle safety management, proper handling of loads, good body posture during tasks, and overall workplace safety. These practices are especially important at this stage of the Koboko, Yumbe, and Moyo road construction project, where the risks are higher and the work demands careful attention.

Today afternoon, we conducted a road safety sensitization in Zone 2 of the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement (yumbe district), one of the largest refugee settlements in the world, which hosts over 200,000 people, primarily from South Sudan. As the Koboko–Yumbe–Moyo road is being upgraded from gravel to bituminous, there are many road risks and the road designs may not be familiar. All this to help reduce the road carnage which claim thousands of peopleevery year in Uganda. We thank the assistant Settlement commandant, the RWCs for their efforts to be part of those activity. Day 2 focused on strengthening the training of trainers for key stakeholders and leaders from different groups. The goal was to give these leaders the skills and confidence they need to train their own members so everyone becomes a more responsible road user. The sessions covered practical topics like first aid and road safety management. The training team included project consultants, police officers, and officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport. Each group shared clear, hands-on guidance to help leaders understand what to teach and how to teach it effectively. Sensitisation took place at Yumbe Primary School this morning. The activity aimed to keep road safety awareness active within the school community and to strengthen the culture of safe behaviour among pupils. The headteacher welcomed the initiative and provided a supportive platform that allowed the team to engage freely with learners. During the session, pupils participated in short quizzes and discussions. A few of them received small prizes for giving correct answers to the questions asked. We opened Day 1 of the KYM Road Safety ToT in Yumbe with clear discussions on roles, responsibilities, child safety, blackspot mapping, and road works safety. Participants aligned on the agenda and selected new Road Safety Ambassadors for the corridor. The sessions were focused, practical and commited to improving safety along the Koboko, Yumbe, Moyo route.

Today, we carried out a pilot sensitization session with boda boda riders. The goal was to equip them with practical knowledge and strengthen their awareness of basic road safety practices in their daily work. The session focused on helping them understand how responsible riding can protect their lives and improve safety in their communities. We also pointed out the common risks they face. Many riders still move without helmets, reflective jackets, or functional side mirrors. We discussed these issues in detail and guided them on proper handling and regular checks of their motorcycles. Markets located close to the road, together with the vendors operating within them, face significant risks, including exposure to excessive dust, damage or loss of property, and other serious challenges that often arise in the event of a road crash. In response to these concerns, we conducted a pilot sensitisation session with vendors from Bagdad Market in Yumbe, aimed at equipping them with practical knowledge on the common road safety issues experienced in market environments, as well as guiding them on realistic, community-based approaches that can be used to prevent, manage, and reduce these risks effectively. #roads #roadsafety

Today, we conducted a brief but impactful sensitisation session at St. Daniel Nursery and Primary School in Yumbe District. During this session, we educated the pupils and raised their awareness about the current road safety situation. We also guided them on how to become responsible road users and emphasized practical ways they can stay safe while using the road in their daily lives.

The leaders showed strong engagement and commitment to champion responsible riding. When Boda-Boda leaders take ownership of road safety, the message spreads faster across stages and communities. Building safer transport starts with informed leaders and responsible riders working together to protect passengers and pedestrians across Kampala.

Avoid buying uncertified helmets because they offer little protection during a road crash and always choose helmets that meet approved safety standards and encourage every boda-boda passenger to wear a helmet before the ride begins. This important message was emphasized today by Mujuni Dickson of the @Bodaindustryug while addressing boda-boda riders and their leaders during the road safety session. #roads #roadsafety
