Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in Brooklyn, Mahlock’s journey began at 17 when she enlisted in the Marines. She quickly rose through the ranks, spending years as an air traffic controller before earning her officer’s commission after graduating from Marquette University in 1991. In 2018, Mahlock made history again when she became the first Black woman to be promoted to brigadier general, breaking yet another barrier in her groundbreaking career. At the time of her promotion, Mahlock was leading the Cyber National Mission Force, further demonstrating her leadership in a field that continues to be shaped by her presence. Her journey served as a powerful reminder that progress doesn't happen overnight, but with determination, perseverance, and self-belief, barriers can be broken and new paths forged.
