When I was a kid, adults didn’t give two shits about safety. No helmets, no seatbelts, billowing clouds of second-hand smoke, playgrounds equipped for Navy SEAL training. But if you tried to use a pair of scissors they freaked the fuck out. So we got these dull motherfuckers.

@CC_StormWatch People see videos like the VERY lucky crew during the 4/26/91 Kansas tornadoes and think it's safe. What they NEED to see are the heart wrenching photos from 5/3/99. :(

@christen_rexing Our district has chosen "closed" for tomorrow. I don't have kids, but for teacher friends and friends with kids, I'm happy on their behalf.

January 10, 1862, Julia Tyler arrived at Richmond’s Exchange Hotel with her two-year-old daughter Pearl to surprise her husband. The couple met in Tyler’s hotel room and Julia proceeded to tell him a dream she had that prompted her to travel to Richmond. In her dream, she saw Tyler in bed, “lying there, looking pale and ill.” Tyler thought it amusing and the coupled moved on. Later that night, Julia woke up, her head wracked by a major headache. Tyler was ready to call for a doctor and remarked to her “You see, your dream is out; it is your head that I am holding, and not you mine.” Saturday morning, Tyler, first out of bed, got dressed and headed downstairs to warm his chilled body with a cup of tea. His teacup empty, he got up from his chair but stumbled and fell to the floor; he had suffered a TIA (transient ischemic attack). Friends ran to his side and helped him to a couch/sofa in the lady’s parlor. He summoned his strength, got to his feet, slowly climbed the stairs, and entered his room without aide or doctor. Try as he might to not cause alarm or worry Julia, it was to no avail. Soon enough, friends came calling at his room, knocking on the door, filing into his room, encouraging him to lay down and wanting to call for a doctor. Tyler managed to calm his friends, turned them away, and then turned his attention to his wife’s dream, which, to him, was more a premonition, “Her dream is a true one and I leave my wife and her children to God and my country.” Later that day, Dr. Peachy arrived and examined Tyler. For Peachy, Tyler’s stumble was caused by bilious (nausea and vomiting) along with bronchitis. A dose of morphine was given, causing Tyler to “make wandering remarks when half asleep.” At any rate, there was little Peachy could do as his medical knowledge didn’t include a comprehensive understanding of what happens to the brain when a portion of it loses blood flow. Over the course of the week, Tyler gained enough strength to make plans to return to his home, Sherwood Plantation, aiming to leave on Saturday, January 18. But sadly, it wasn’t to be. Friday night, a week after Julia made her surprise visit, Tyler went to bed, excited to leave Richmond; unsure for how long he was planning to be home. One hour after falling asleep, he woke up. His breathing was labored and he fell out of bed, landing on his daughter’s cot, waking her. He crawled back into bed and his son, Robert, sleeping nearby on a sofa, summoned Dr. Brown. Brown hastily gathered his medical bag and hurried down the hall to Tyler’s room. He examined Tyler, and got to work, placing mustard plasters on his chest and giving him distilled spirits. Dr. Peachy (alerted to Tyler's condition) walked in and joined Brown’s efforts but there was little either man could do to help the former President. Tyler, sensing Peachy was at his bedside, told him, “Doctor, I am going.” “I hope not sir,” responded Peachy. “Perhaps it is best,” retorted Tyler. They were his last words. Julia raised a glass of distilled spirits to his lips. Tyler’s teeth chattered on the glass, he then looked forward, his face cast in a brilliant, beautiful expression, “and then, as if falling asleep, was gone!” Time of death, 12:15 AM; January 18, 1862. CoD: stroke. Exchange Hotel is on the right side.

Today's anniversary of the tornado outbreak that included tornadoes near Andover and El Dorado, Kansas, is a good time for a reminder: DON'T SHELTER UNDER AN OVERPASS! That TV crew got lucky.

@bryanpackebush So far, I've added 2 books that are annual reads for me: "Destiny of the Republic" by Candace Millard about the death of President Garfield, and "Triangle" by Don von Drehle, about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.

#EMGTwitter folk: I'm trying to use up credits for free audiobooks. Are there any disaster-related books that you especially recommend the audiobook version? Histories, case studies especially, but any welcome, especially if they're permanent additions to your collection.

The town of West, Texas: with a population of 2,500, it's not known for a lot other than a proud Czech heritage. #Onthisday in 2013, the tiny burg was rocked by tragedy when an explosion at a fertilizer factory killed 15, including 12 firefighters. csb.gov/videos/dangero…
