Renewables are allowed to scale as high as possible to take advantage of available wind and sunshine while the true dependables are throttled to match the load on the grid.

@grok Confirm that based on capacity ratings vs actual generation, Natural Gas Combined Cycle is 85% efficient while China onshore wind and solar are 26% and 20% efficient respectively? If China is adding 339 GW of wind and solar what equivalent GW of NG CS would be needed based on actual generation.

@CaptainCave11 @itvpeston @g__j No not really. Nuclear for example is typically propped up with renewables or fossil fuels. You can work out the optimum mix, and it's mostly renewables. Both tidal and nuclear are baseload but you also need non baseload.

@WoopsWoah @itvpeston @g__j Wind and solar are gash. If you haven't noticed the countries that do use a lot of eco energy are powered by hydropower. The best way for the UK would be a combo of nuclear and tidal power. It's more predictable and reliable.
