New research presented to the American Academy of Neurology warns that a growing number of parents are opting out of the routine vitamin K shot for their newborns, a trend that dramatically increases the risk of catastrophic internal bleeding.
While refusal rates remain low overall, data from over 400 U.S. hospitals shows a nearly twofold increase in refusals between 2017 and 2024, rising from 2.92% to over 5%.
This shift is particularly dangerous because infants who do not receive the prophylaxis are 81 times more likely to develop late-onset vitamin K deficiency bleeding, a rare but severe condition that can cause sudden strokes or hemorrhages within the first six months of life.
The physical and neurological toll of this preventable condition is severe, with roughly 63% of affected infants suffering from intracranial bleeding. These brain bleeds carry a mortality rate of up to 20%, while half of all survivors face permanent neurological disabilities. Experts note that the refusal of vitamin K—which has been the global standard of care since 1961—is often linked to broader vaccine hesitancy and misconceptions about pain or preservatives. Neurologists emphasize that proactive prenatal counseling is now essential to ensure parents understand that this simple supplement is the single most effective safeguard against avoidable infant death and lifelong developmental disorders.
