Reminder that the whole earth, perpetually steeped in blood, is nothing but a vast altar upon which all that is living must be sacrificed without end, without measure, without pause, until the consummation of things, until evil is extinct, until the death of death.

@Empty_America People conflate two types of chaos. If chaos means less trade, we flee to the dollar. If chaos means DC got nuked, then sure, maybe gold will be useful. Similar: If gas hits $50 a gallon, people would flee *to* the cities, it would take a lot more to make them flee *from* them.

@BBDaybreakEU You're way overthinking this. Cool Britannia was basically a product of Harry Potter, plus a few other major media franchises, most of which are long past peak relevance now. Japan's current cultural heft is because anime is better than the crap coming out of Hollywood.

I don't actually think there's much of a materialist explanation. Perhaps some, but not that much. It has to do more with the cultural signifiers of Brexit, the rise of woke, the steady browning of the American middle class and their indifference towards 'old European' culture more generally, and now America's patriotic turn across various segments of society which translates most comfortably into anti-Britain and anti-European sentiment (a kind of 'woke synthesis'). A compelling counter-example: the rise of Japan's cultural heft in the US over the last 15 years has accompanied very mediocre economic performance, in fact Japan has even been a bit more economically stagnant than Britain.

One of those Economic Materialism moments is when you realize the rise and fall of Tumblr Anglophilia basically tracked the city's financial fortunes

An old communist woman handed me a leaflet for the leftist candidate for Paris and when I told her I took issue with his stance on rent control she just looked at me like this

@atlanticesque They actually delivered a lot of housing in CA: Like ~20% of new housing units are ADUs. Though that's arguably a comment on how non-dense most of CA actually is and how little housing we produce in total. (They didn't deliver much in e.g., San Francisco.)

ADUs are basically a nonfactor in the housing market. This is true even in much smaller, less dense cities than NYC. That said, it’s insane that they even had to be legalized. This is something every property owner should be able to just do, without justification. Basic freedom.
Chris Goldammer@floor_per_area

And it's good to see: ADUs have already been taking off! Latest count: 107. Map shows proposed units. A map where Staten Island should definitely be included!

@ClwnPrncCharlie For its many problems, and its still not perfect, NYC is much better about law enforcement than California's cities
