Ohio nursing homes are dumping patients at homeless shelters, according to Signal Ohio. Inspectors for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which funds most nursing home care in the U.S., are increasingly reporting that nursing home residents are being dropped off at homeless shelters where they simply can't get the care they need. The nursing home industry is increasingly being subjected to acquisitions by private equity, and even facilities that aren't being bought out still face rising costs or greater pressure to produce profits. In Ohio alone about 13,000 people are discharged from a nursing home each month. And although nursing homes have legal obligations to make sure that discharges are “safe and appropriate," it's ultimately unilaterally up to the facility to decide where a person should go. signalohio.org/ohio-nursing-h…

“They’re using us, our service, to get away with war crimes!” Veterans disrupted a “Veteran Benefits and Resource Fair” at UChicago on Monday, after the program‘s opening remarks thanked arms dealer Boeing for their sponsorship. The protesters directly confronted Boeing executive Todd Bertulis over the firm’s profiteering from U.S. wars while Veterans Affairs benefits and caregivers’ union rights are slashed by VA secretary Doug Collins and the Trump administration. The protestors were dragged out by event security, with @vetsaboutface organizer even being placed in a chokehold.

The trope that associates violent profiteering by elites and their henchmen with being “tough on crime” was pushed by both right wing and liberal media organizations for decades. It is one of the great achievements of modern propaganda to associate cruelty and domination and violence with “safety.” Trump saying today that the pope is “WEAK on crime” is extremely funny, but as with much of what Trump does, he also helps expose how baseless and cynical the liberal establishment has become. The major newspapers and tv channels of the United States have been filled with such unquestioned statements about nearly every evidence-based progressive attempt to reduce inequality and make our society less cruel and more safe. He and another Navy veteran built the brand from $800 in 2012—to an $80 million empire today. Police officer uses excessive force to handcuff him for trespassing—video clearly shows he is not resisting.
