@UBadler I really don’t understand how some people don’t figure out what really may be the danger. Are they fools or just not clear on the problem?

The fees are not the problem, their charging process for installations is. They now say it's based on 1 install per account, but what is an account? Regardless, people with bad intent can still easily weaponize it against devs. #gamedev #indiedev

@CrazyRetroGame1 Submitting bug reports and feature requests to open source platforms isn't arrogant, it's encouraged.

To think that we can use something for free and then make demands is possibly just a little arrogant, is it not ?

@the_real_aia No one is worried about the fee. It's the implementation that is completely off the wall. If Unity could track installs they way they are insisting they can, then Unity would be a piracy free platform. They are lying about a solution to a problem that they never thought about

I've been working hard on some projects, but I've been closely following the #unity3d news... Despite the gloomy tone... I plan to continue to develop using Unity. As a solo indie dev, I would likely never reach the thresholds that would kick any fee into play. If I do, I'd be making enough to warrant the fee. My larger concern was with player privacy and how installs are tracked. Unity has stated that they will comply with all privacy laws in this regard. I still have reservations about it, but I am willing to trust for the time being. While they scramble to clarify everything

If the #unity runtime could detect pirate installs, it would have cemented itself as the #1 game engine, but it simply cannot. The per-install fee is so divorced from reality that the management should be screened for mental health issues before being allowed to return to work.

#unity should learn from BMW after implementing a subscription service for heated seats. “People feel that they paid double – which was actually not true, but perception is reality, I always say. So that was the reason we stopped that.”

@unity There is no confusion. Your management is incompetent and is attempting to ham fist through a terrible approach. You had once chance to fix this by walking it back 100% and reconsidering but you blew it.

We want to acknowledge the confusion and frustration we heard after we announced our new runtime fee policy. We’d like to clarify some of your top questions and concerns: Who is impacted by this price increase: The price increase is very targeted. In fact, more than 90% of our customers will not be affected by this change. Customers who will be impacted are generally those who have found a substantial scale in downloads and revenue and have reached both our install and revenue thresholds. This means a low (or no) fee for creators who have not found scale success yet and a modest one-time fee for those who have. Fee on new installs only: Once you meet the two install and revenue thresholds, you only pay the runtime fee on new installs after Jan 1, 2024. It’s not perpetual: You only pay once for an install, not an ongoing perpetual license royalty like a revenue share model. How we define and count installs: Assuming the install and revenue thresholds are met, we will only count net new installs on any device starting Jan 1, 2024. Additionally, developers are not responsible for paying a runtime fee on: - Re-install charges - we are not going to charge a fee for re-installs. - Fraudulent installs charges - we are not going to charge a fee for fraudulent installs. We will work directly with you on cases where fraud or botnets are suspected of malicious intent. - Trials, partial play demos, and automation installs (devops) charges - we are not going to count these toward your install count. Early access games are not considered demos. - Web and streaming games - we are not going to count web and streaming games toward your install count either. - Charity-related installs - the pricing change and install count will not be applied to your charity bundles/initiatives. For additional questions, we have updated our blog and FAQ resources. ⬇️ Blog: on.unity.com/3ZiIwlB FAQ: on.unity.com/44NMZ0R Forums: on.unity.com/45RgrnV

@samyam_youtube I think that's the point. There would have been a backlash to the royalty so they gave the worst option first, then walkback to what they actually wanted. If a royalty scheme is the end result, that was actually the intended purpose.

i would much prefer a royalty cut like epic games does than the confusion that seats + flat fee per install of game introduces. there are so many unknowns, so many edge cases with this new policy, so many people this will impact.

#unity3d decided to make a game called "Angry Unity Developers". Only buy, no install. 20c per Twitter view that's my TOC. Early access though, I think the head is super heavy which makes it difficult to clear the level.

@ParaDymeTV Unity publishes to multiple platforms out of the box. It has a tonnes of basic game functionality built in and all of it is highly customizeable. It runs and builds fast and uses C# which is much easier to write than C++.

I'm not a developer but it seems like a lot of devs use Unity just from seeing the logo splash on lots of the indies I play. Curious what the reasons are that it's so widely used? Is it super user-friendly?

@cloudofoz @FreyaHolmer I'll butt in and just say that if the concept of charging for a re-install goes through unchallenged, then other companies will not ignore it. Eventually, the end user will be charged for re-install. Re-installing can also be abused by bots adding a new risk for developers.

@FreyaHolmer Just a stupid question 🙏, it's just that I want to know better. @FreyaHolmer can I ask you if the Unity "tax" that applies after 200000$ of revenues is worrying you? I would like to undestand what is the average budget of those who invest in a specific game engine.

#unity3d is the canary in the coal mine. If this goes through, other companies will start charging the customer for re-installs. It will be the new paradigm. If #unity3d wants to rebuild trust, they can start with "... we're listening, and we've just fired our CEO".

@Jakob_Wahlberg I've been using Unity for a decade and I've just managed to solo publish on iOS and Android. This a stab in the face after years of dedicated work. What company wants to use Unity given that they can mess with their profit margins on a whim, and only give them 4 months heads up?

Let's be clear. The damage is done. They made an arbitrary, badly communicated, weird & extreme change to their business model with 4 months to prepare. Even if they totally revert, which they wont, there is NO way I'll trust Unity with another project. It's just impossible.

@IndieBandits I have never even considered another engine until now. It's not just that it's a bad idea, it's clear no one at the top thought it through. Unity's management is incompetent. I thought I could stick with Unity but that is not an option for the future, even if they reverse course
