If Matthew Knies is dealt, a return of a defenceman like Bowen Byram and futures (prospects + picks) might make sense for both sides. I'm not sure how much an impact defenceman Byram is but it looks like he's likely going to free agency in July of 2027 if Buffalo hangs onto him.

If Toronto is trading Knies it really shouldn't be for futures. If it's a package for a similar aged player at a more premium position that's established but not as good + a first or blue chip that makes sense.
