I love technology, but it must be managed against the detriment of education. Insightful read.
Karen Vaites@karenvaites

“A Princeton historian said his students arrive on campus with a narrower vocabulary and less understanding of language than they used to have. There are always students who “read insightfully and easily and write beautifully,” he said, “but they are now more exceptions.” Jack Chen, a Chinese-literature professor at the University of Virginia, finds his students “shutting down” when confronted with ideas they don’t understand; they’re less able to persist through a challenging text than they used to be. Daniel Shore, the chair of Georgetown’s English department, told me that his students have trouble staying focused on even a sonnet.” ICYMI, @rosehorowitch’s grim coverage of the declining reading skills of American college students. The role of education policy in these shifts gets attention; @DKThomp asked her about it in his podcast, too. It’s fair to point to No Child Left Behind and the pressures of standardized testing as a culprit. The Common Core, on the other hand, is an unlikely culprit: nothing about introducing more nonfiction into classrooms – which primarily affected elementary grade curriculum – necessitates a move away from books and towards passages. In classrooms using the most Common Core-aligned curricula, you’ll find elementary students reading books about pollinators and sea mammals, and whole texts through HS. Accordingly, Sue Pimentel, the lead author of the CCSS in ELA, has been the loudest advocate for placing texts at the heart of instruction. I’d say the shift is probably as much culture as policy: schools are simply lowering the rigor bar, and few are challenging this shift. Or frankly, paying much attention to it. Also, the shifts in book-centered curriculum are a supply-side story, as much as a demand-side story. It’s more profitable to sell a curriculum full of passages than it is to sell one full of books. This supply-side story deserves more exploration.

@lisaalpe4sbisd @HarrisCountyRP So middle schools older than Tully were not identified as a need but a Jumbotron was? Previous bonds for rebuilds have passed with majorities greater than 70%. Prop B only passed with the slimmest of majority of 50.5%. Your self satisfication is not warranted.

@concernedSBISD @HarrisCountyRP I will sleep just fine! Our job as trustees is to identify needs of the district and put it before the voters to decide. The voters weighed in, prioritizing 3 of the 4 projects. That’s democracy.

Conservative SBISD voters passed bond props ABC last night signifying their continued support for pub ed and our district. One of the takeaways is that there is a lot of room in this party for the educational support of 5.5 public school children in Texas. @HarrisCountyRP @MichaelBerrySho

@mamaknowsbooks Do you know how to stop senseless gun violence? Sensible gun laws. Just look to every wealthy nation where gun ownership is either heavily regulated or restricted.

Sheriff Gonzales says he is “pledging support” for a proposed bill in TX that criminalizes modified hand guns. You can make whatever laws you want about guns, but it’s not going to stop senseless violence. You know what stops that? Being tough on crime. foxnews.com/us/grandpa-sho…

@lisaalpe4sbisd @jennifer_blaine @SBISD Thank you to the 2020 board & administration who effectively navigated uncharted waters. These were the very people you campaigned against, claiming mismanagement and lack of transparency. All of which is evident with the current board of trustees.

@ManoForStateRep @LaceyHullTx Spiral is an excellent program. But because of underfunding SBISD parents had to step up to finance it. Fully fund public schools so that our students can continue to excel. This is school choice not vouchers which only benefit the wealthy.

@lisaalpe4sbisd @rdgarcia03 @chris_earnest21 @SBISD Can you please list the qualifications of community members who were consulted on what the bond should include? Why were hierarchical projects which did not make the cut in the last bond not considered this time around? Facilities for cut sports are not for “Every Child”.

@rdgarcia03 @chris_earnest21 @SBISD I would be happy to discuss our bond proposal anytime. As you may not know, school districts have no other way to improve aging facilities other than bonds. I am proud of the conservative work this BOT has done. I believe in letting the community speak-that is democracy.

.@chris_earnest21, @lisaalpe4sbisd & Co. on the @SBISD Board are constantly screaming at legislators for ever more state funding…and now they want to RAISE LOCAL PROPERTY TAXES with a bloated $630 MILLION bond to renovate sports facilities. Remember - a bond is ALWAYS a tax increase. Thanks to the two conservatives on the board who voted against this pork-laden monstrosity. Next time SBISD trustees gripe that the latest state funding increase isn’t enough and tell sob stories about the programs they’ll have to cut unless they get even more….remember that they are RAISING TAXES for sports facilities. Sadly, this farce plays in school districts throughout the state.

We have staff assigned to our libraries. Removal of librarians is also a modern trend. We won’t need 40+. Librarians were also central to allowing alot of thr filth that we cleaned up in our libraries so spare me. You must feel so brave to post under a fake name. Such courage

@chris_earnest21 @rdgarcia03 @lisaalpe4sbisd @SBISD I also pay a lot in property taxes and I am tired of not having librarians in our schools. I guess literature does not matter to you. That is OK…. I could be equally rude. It is a shame that a school board member does not possess the same civility.

Two different buckets of money. Bind money goes directly to our facilities. I’m not ashamed to say that our kids deserve better facilities. The avg age of any facility we’re looking to upgrade is 58 years old. Older than you I imagine. I pay a lot in property tax - I’m tired of having sub-par facilities. Tully Stadium is about the same age as the Astrodome. I think the Texans are already lobbying for a new stadium. Our Natatorium is literally held together with zip ties. I guess those programs don’t matter to you. That’s ok - you don’t look much like an athlete so I’m not surprised

@Perez4Texas Effective writing skills is largely achieved by exposure to literary text. Learners acquire the grammatical structures, constructions, and coherence unconsciously. Perhaps enlist the talents of school librarians to achieve this. Oh wait…..

I’m on a mission. Yes, I know some think it is a lost cause. But I still value effective writing and our schools don’t consistently teach students how to convey and influence through the written word anymore. I welcome any thoughts on how to measure success quantitatively. I was thinking of using AI to analyze before and after samples of work to assess improvement in perhaps a more specific objective and consistent manner. Both the baseline and later samples will be handwritten. I know, absolute medieval.

@mamaknowsbooks @jamestalarico Can you list private schools with $10K tuition? Students from low socioeconomic backgrounds cannot afford the difference. In reality states where vouchers were implemented 65-70% of vouchers went to students already enrolled in private schools.

@jamestalarico Are you serious? This is how out of touch you are. It’a not the wealthy who need vouchers…it’s those who are zoned to schools with less resources. Why are you against people in lower socio economic neighborhoods sending their kids to a school of their choice?

There are some self-proclaimed Christians pushing voucher scams. Vouchers take money from public schools and give it to wealthy parents who already send their kids to private school. I can’t think of anything more un-Christian than stealing from the poor to give to the rich.

I’m not sure what this has to do with baseball and softball fields. I have middle schoolers and I don’t get the impression they want to take weekly visits to the library like they did in 3rd grade. Student-athletes fall under the category of “EVERY CHILD” too and the district hasn’t invested money in our facilities for a very long time. It’s over-due, we have fallen behind, and I intend to bring awareness to it

UIL Baseball & Softball just started and only days into this new season @SBISD teams are already at a competitive disadvantage relative to district rivals, the majority of ISDs across the state, and every private school in our area. 50% of all practices days to date have been affected by rain / wet conditions. With rain in the forecast all week - SBISD teams will be lucky to get any normal work in on our fields over the next 4-5 days. Meanwhile 63% of District 17-6A will have field practices all week on their turf facilities. It’s time to do something about it. #TURF

@concernedSBISD The earths climate has changed naturally over time. It’s not a new phenomena. Also, the SUN is the biggest contributor of climate change. As for government control of weather, I have stated that it is important for citizens to ask questions. What is wrong with that?
