Professor Pape is a good analyst. Yet, this framing tilts the scales toward ground war, without fully considering the potential costs of that war or its likely failure. I find this irresponsible.
Robert A. Pape@ProfessorPape

In my new piece in The New York Times today, I argue the Iran war has reached a point Washington still refuses to say out loud: either the U.S. escalates to a ground war—or Iran emerges as a new center of global power. Think about—what stops this future? nytimes.com/2026/04/06/opi…

The level of cognitive dissonance among some Americans is staggering. They have no trouble understanding that when China extends loans to African countries in exchange for opening their markets, it is a strategy of domination and subjugation. Yet they are sincerely convinced that the Marshall Plan was some kind of entirely selfless philanthropic endeavor, and that the subsequent dominance of American corporations across European markets is purely coincidental, owed to nothing but the inherent superiority of their products. Incredible.

@cryptotechnocrt @IsabellaMWeber @grok The jump is sellers’ inflation" means that the sharp increase in corporate profits, particularly from 2003 onwards, was driven by firms using their market power to raise prices for consumers faster and higher than their actual costs were rising. (gemini).

SMCP article on Hasan's visit to China. This is a country with mobile execution vans! The state kills people inside the vans with *no* transparency or due process! One out of a trillion human rights issues there and this ultra-outspoken audacious asshat is suddenly the model of humbleness. It's gross is what it is. archive.is/lsGC0

@ProfDBernstein @mattyglesias Do you think you would have been in favour of granting black people civil rights in America? Or do you think their rights are conditional on their supposed leaders saying things you find agreeable

The thing that’s likely to change if Netanyahu loses power is policy toward the Haredi not policy toward the Palestinians.

@ProfDBernstein @mattyglesias Absolute nonsense but even if i were to grant that: a people’s rights arent contingent on their leaders’ actions…. human rights are universal — it’s called liberalism, something I’m sure you delude yourself into identifying with

Unironically, we must reject the parochial third-worldism of Donald Trump and embrace the pluralistic civic values of the western tradition that Zohran Kwame Mamdani is upholding.

@ProfDBernstein @mattyglesias so do you support enfranchising all palestinians living under Israeli occupation? But I assume youre happy with the current state of affairs where Palestinians have next to no rights

There is nothing to change, other than cracking down on lawlessness. There is no Palestinian partner willing and able to negotiate a peace settlement, so there won't be one. Which is precisely why the left is dead in Israel, their political viability was based on "land for peace."

@James_Kabala @mattyglesias @AssalRad @Musa_alGharbi I understand what you mean - but do you think ‘take control’ is a responsible way of describing a violent invasion, complete with the ethnic cleansing of the population and the systematic decimation of civilian homes and infrastructure

@mattyglesias @AssalRad @Musa_alGharbi I think their aim is annexation but even if i were to accept your point, do you not think that ‘take control’ is a fundamentally misleading and bizarre way to talk about a violent invasion and self-admitted ethnic cleansing?

@cryptotechnocrt @AssalRad @Musa_alGharbi I’m saying the reason the Times describes it as an annexation in one case and not the other is that in one case there is an annexation and in the other there is not. The point isn’t to defend Israel, but to defend headline writers who are catching underserved criticism.
