@GuntherEagleman So now that we agree the tariffs are an import tax payed by the US companies, the political discussion is whether consumer prices should be set on a free market or by decree from the ruler of the nation?
English

@TheMaineWonk And a too small number of voters understand basic concepts such as tariffs.
As a foreigner, my conclusion is that the US cannot be trusted as long as it remains a democracy.
An educated elite (of what historically would be considered ordinary people) needs to seize power first.
English

@bestinvesting1 @PeterSchiff As long as growth is larger than deficit you can keep running a deficit without owning less over time, and trade is great for growth. Anyone familiar with US economic history knows this.
English

@PeterSchiff If Europe can not sell anything to China, the China will own the whole Europe soon.
English

@acnewsitics You never thought to ask yourself why not all countries are 100% financed by taxing other countries if that really was an option?
Or did Trump make you believe that the US has a unique power to unilaterally tax all people on earth?
English

@catturd2 Increasing import tax to reduce income tax is a tax shift from rich to poor. This is rather basic knowledge.
The whole world should consider offering to pay for public education in America to prevent people from buying the maga nonsense, because we all suffer from this.
English

@bjornsing @eliasspaningar Skulle säga att hon ger stöd åt grundtropen med en judekonspiration som styr allt.
Men jag håller med om att det är en modifikation av gängse antisemitism.
Kanske två huvuddrag i vänsterns antisemitism?

Svenska

@stanielzeroone @DesireeAmerica4 Raising import tax while lowering income tax is a shift from taxing the rich(er) to taxing the poor(er).
How did you guys fall for tariffs being tax cuts, tax on rich, or paid by China?
English

@DesireeAmerica4 Holding a gun up to someone who also has a gun is not the art of the deal.
Thats a mexican standoff.
But hey the market getting nuclear warfared is a tax on the rich and Iam able to buy assets at a giga discount.
Long live trump.
English

@PBob9016549 @petitchou96 @elonmusk Point taken, they all lie.
Politicians are not in the business of informing the public about facts. On the contrary, they do have an agenda, and that is how it should be.
So for any politician, even the ones we like, we should investigate the truth of what they are saying.
English

@BruceBeck242979 @conorsen How come the stock market suddenly is just a concern for people owning stocks?
A sudden drop means that a majority of people with skin in the game have reevaluated the situation and are now less optimistic about the future. It means experts think bad decisions have been made.
English

@petitchou96 @elonmusk I find this app amazingly fascinating. This is the only way for me to find people that still believe the tariffs are reciprocal.
When trusting your president to tell you the truth about the tariffs, did you first consider pros and cons in trusting a habitually lying felon?
English

@elonmusk Trump didn’t start the trade war. He’s trying to end it. By insisting on reciprocal tariffs, he’s actually coaxing the other others to decrease their own tariffs against us. Hopefully eventually there will be no tariffs against anyone as they drop theirs and we drop ours.
English

@elonmusk Nah. Peace and harmony and cooperation sounds like suspiciously leftist goals. Let’s kill it with tariffs!
English

@Turtlenumber13 @DerrickEvans4WV Why do you keep saying that? Don’t you have friends who can correct your nonsense in a friendly way?
English

@DerrickEvans4WV That's what I keep saying: it only affects you if you choose to buy those items, so it's really a tax on the wealthy, as luxury items aren't a priority for most people.
English

@DerrickEvans4WV Yeah, because common sense and basic knowledge of concepts such as supply and demand are expected to be totally ignored now in our unstoppable quest to justify the actions of the great leader no matter what.
English

@MarindaVannoy1 A 5 year old cannot be expected to understand the difference between trade deficit and tariffs, so to a 5 year old I would just say that Mr Trump lies.
Adults, on the other hand, should make the effort to understand basics before talking at all, in my opinion.
English

@EurydiceEve @Number10cat That is aggregate deficit over all trade. Trump seems to be aiming for trade balance with each individual trade partner - which is something completely different, belonging to medieval economic theory.
English

@Number10cat The goal is instead of us being the world’s consumers, we let the world be our consumers. We spend less, we conserve, we save, we invest, we learn to wait. We grow up as a country.
English

@JoeStablishment @DavidAFrench Your point seems to rely on the assumption that freedom of speech is the same as freedom from objections.
Is really the president’s free speech infringed in any way when someone points out that what he and friends are saying is weird and makes things worse?
English

@DavidAFrench Ah David, democracy thrives when we carefully curate which jokes are allowed! Perhaps some enhanced interrogation of humor via our friends at the FBI can help restore proper discourse. Remember: controlled speech is free speech!
English

It was a bad joke when Trump seemed to be trolling, but now it's getting weird and disturbing that they won't drop this. It's not going to happen. It's making everything worse.
NOTUS@NOTUSreports
NOTUS’ @JasJWright: “Does this administration still consider Canada to be a close ally of the United States?” Press Sec. Karoline Leavitt: “[Pres. Trump] believes Canadians will be better served economically, militarily, if they were to become the 51st state.”
English

@driscoll1142 @allenanalysis There are valid argument for tariffs. Anyone arguing for tariffs in good faith would use them.
Leavitt and Trump on the other hand, prefer for some reason to use arguments that are obviously untrue.
English

@allenanalysis Okay. I'll bite then, what is the correct answer?
Why shouldn't we place tariffs, or taxes, on foreign companies sending their product to the United States?
English

🚨 SMACKDOWN ALERT: AP Reporter Destroys Karoline Leavitt on Basic Economics—She Immediately Melts Down
AP REPORTER: “Have you ever PAID a tariff? Because I HAVE. They don’t get charged on foreign companies, they get charged on the importers.”
LEAVITT: “I think it is insulting you are trying to test my knowledge of economics… I now regret giving a question to the Associated Press.”
Karoline Leavitt had no clue what she was talking about, got publicly humiliated, and instead of responding with facts, she threw a tantrum and refused to answer more questions.
English

@nicksortor Agree. She of course knows.
Perhaps better to say that her argument obviously will be dismissed as utterly untrue by anyone who has ever paid tariffs, and ask her why she still prefers that untrue argument since surely there are ways to argue for tariffs without lying?
English
