🇩🇪 GERMAN CHANCELLOR ADMITS THEY FUCKED UP THE WHOLE ENERGY THING Friedrich Merz just plainly admitted: ditching nuclear was "a serious strategic mistake" and Germany's running the world's most expensive energy transition. "At least 3 years ago we had to leave the last remaining nuclear power plants in Germany on the grid so that we at least had the power generation capacities we had at that time. We have taken over something that we now have to correct. But we just don't have enough energy generation capacities." Duh, Herr Kanzler! Source: @clashreport

Nuclear energy is back – and momentum is stronger than ever. On October 6–7, the Nordic-Baltic Nuclear Investment Summit will take place in Stockholm. This is a historic high-level meeting by the governments of Sweden and Finland, bringing together governments, investors, and innovators to scale up reliable, clean, baseload energy to ensure our security and competitiveness in a new era.

GRID INERTIA & SPANISH BLACKOUT: An analogy in an article from @ENEC_UAE CEO Mohammad al-Hammadi contains this useful metaphor, from @QvistStaffan's team at Quantified Carbon. Small or medium-sized disturbances on the grid become very difficult to manage and can cascade into wider instability and outages when the grid is in a low inertia condition, as was the case Monday in Spain just before the massive ongoing blackout, as seen in this snapshot captured by @JavierBlas.

Javier Blas@JavierBlas

Before the outage hit, Spain was running its grid with very little dispatchable spinning generation, and therefore no much inertia. Solar PV/thermal + wind: ~78% Nuclear: 11.5% Co-generation: 5% Gas-fired: ~3% (less than 1GW) Snapshot at 12.30pm local time (outage was 12.35pm)

Eight (!) German research institutes team up to conclude that "green hydrogen" will still be 4x as expensive as natural gas in Germany even in 2050. Of course, you could have learned this for free from @sabinehossenfelder a year ago on YouTube. n-tv.de/wirtschaft/Gru…

We need to send this guy to Germany immediately before the next dunkelflaute. Apparently the problem is the silly Germans just forgot to turn their wind turbines on.

@Robbbie_Sharp @DPAutomation @InstituteGC What an absolute betrayal. That woman and her British counterpart should have been investigated and charged. "I couldn't tell anyone..." No shit she couldn't. Should've been in handcuffs.

Thread: Each week I run a simulation of Australia’s main electricity grid using rescaled generation data to show that it can get very close to 100% renewable electricity with 24GW/120GWh of storage (5 hrs at av demand) Results: Last week: 100% RE Last 160 weeks: 98.5% RE (1/n)

Dutton's report excluded costings for nuclear waste management, decommisioning and site remediation, potential health impacts, environmental degradation, and thermal pollution and contingencies for delays and cost overruns. Its costings were based on less energy use by all Australians. Why? AUKUS also ignores significant long-term and risk-related expenses, if you really wish to raise that as a connected issue.

@NukeDaveSweeney Without costings for waste plants and management, it's truly a redundant report already on the day it was launched.

Another day of sky-high electricity prices across much of Europe as wind speed falls. Germany drawing strongly on fossil fuels and, crucially, imports of French nuclear electricity to keep the lights on | #Dunkelflaute #Energiewende
