@JacquesMaree73 @Oliver_Speaking No, those two concepts are only made distinct in the modern west when really they have historically been synonyms. Not be confused with anarchy, liberalism is still meant to be a small-government, market-based, freedom-protecting ideology and the DA largely fails at that.

@Oliver_Speaking I think you misunderstand what liberalism means, and what the role of a liberal government should be. You're perhaps mistaking it for libertarianism.

I think the DA should stop identifying as a liberal party because it is only *sometimes* liberal. This short exchange between myself and Helen Zille is telling of that

On a related note, did you know Chinese South Africans qualify as "black" when it comes to Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policies?

@ConCaracal That’s basically a larger version of a scam that goes on in the USA every single day with government contracts that favor women and minority owned businesses.

@DrInsensitive Bring back haggling. Haggle everything. Just because it’s printed doesn’t mean it’s final. We will negotiate the final price. Heck, it may even be half the bill price after I’m done stating my case.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but when you quote a price and I accept, we made a contract. So if my bill includes a surprise 10% "Service charge," then you lied about the price and you should go to jail.

Think of the political leverage and momentum the left harnessed with George Floyd. Now think of how Charlie Kirk was martyred on video for the entire world to see. The right squandered the opportunity to make systemic change in that aftermath and it bothers me so much.

One of the most infuriating trends of the woke era people are already forgetting is how professional media would write articles claiming a noncriminal (and sometimes also criminal) but obnoxious, antisocial and disruptive behavior that is correlated with a minority group is good, actually, and the reason you have a problem with it is that you are a racist, or at least ensconced in unexamined privilege. These behaviors included: Playing loud music in public places through boomboxes or bluetooth speakers, "Showtime" dancers who perform unsolicited and dangerous dance routines in crowded subway cars and then aggressively demand money from all the passengers as compensation for the dancing nobody wanted, unlicensed street vendors selling unsanitary food and "teen takeovers" or "flash mobs." Also, Gawker once wrote a piece defending mugging. I hope we have finally reached a point where we can all agree that laws and norms are good and that all these things are bad and annoying.
AltAzn@Alt_Azn

The Sabrina Carpenter incident reminded me of this Atlantic article originally titled “Why do White People Love Quiet?”. The author was shocked that when she went to an Ivy League school her classmates expected her not to blast music at 2 in the morning. Instead of internalizing this is how normal people act she made it racial.

@AlecStapp In South Africa, BEE race regulations kick in at 50 employees and mandatory VAT registration kicks in at some annual turnover threshold. A lot of small companies try to stay just shy of both of these thresholds.

@vse_oche_ploho @AlecStapp This is also true, but the requirement for a licensed architect beyond this point is also almost certainly pointless. I could understand if the threshold was beyond a certain height or a certain number of occupants more than floor area.

@cremieuxrecueil When I owned a restaurant my merchant fees were 1%, not enough to really affect my pricing. But a lot of online merchants for expensive stuff in my country (computer parts, etc) display prices without the CC fee and will charge you an extra ~2.5% if you use a card instead of EFT.

Credit cards redistribute to higher-income households through interchange fees: the fees merchants pay to credit card companies on purchases made by their cards This happens because merchants increase prices to offset fees and richer people disproportionately use credit cards🧵

Credit card rewards are a great way to redistribute billions of dollars from people who are bad with money to people who are good with it. With the advent of rewards cards (red), there's lots of cross-subsidization of people with high credit scores by people with low scores.

@cremieuxrecueil Therefore we can conclude that there is a strong positive correlation between popes and pickpockets. And I therefore deduce that either popes or cardinals are hopeless kleptomaniacs.

Roughly ~50%+ of South Africans buy into these ideas, btw. That's a conservative estimate that presumes that some fraction of ANC, EFF and MK voters aren't aware of what they're supporting. Mostly that would be older ANC voters who don't use the internet much.

Black woman from South Africa: “Black people have been patient enough for more than 400 years of colonialism. We are coming for you, and we are going to get everything that you own.” White people are facing racism, hatred, and brutal violence in South Africa. This is not acceptable. More people should know about the horrible things happening in South Africa; almost nobody talks about it.

@wadechicago @atlanticesque If that were the case it wouldn't be scaled according to property values. Income tax and sales tax are at least paid once in accordance to earnings or expenditure, respectively, you can't ever be "priced out" of your own sales tax.

I am pro-property tax. But I do understand the frustrations which arise with it. “Property tax pays for services which every property needs! Like roads, sewers, and police!” “Oh so most of my property taxes are going towards services like that?” “Haha no”

@h_johanson @thiojoe @atlanticesque Pub schools are a menace and should all be private. Even though most don't, I use private security and fire services at a very reasonable monthly subscription. If you must tax, though, use sales tax. It's the "best" form of tax. I could accept 20% sales tax if it's the only tax.

This woman made her entire career from abandoning the DPRK (North Korea) at like 11 years old and talks about life in the the DPRK 🇰🇵. It’s all propaganda. You can’t understand or remember much of anything from when you were 11 years old. Imagine a 11 year old American kid describing his country to some aliens and being their expert on America. It’s also commonly left out that around 60% of defectors from the DPRK express that they would like to return back home and 40% regret their decision to leave.

In the United States banks made $12 billion in overdraft fees last year. That’s $12 billion they took from people who literally have no money.

finally got to see the video and there's a lot of interesting things going on here. first, there's an element here of the "my culture has a beautiful unique tradition of gathering for a large meal!" type discourse where people from lesser cultures grasp onto mundanity as if they were the only ones who ever did it, always silly. >"in my culture, we like to make loud noises when we are particularly excited!" oh, you mean like "hip hip hooray?" >"no, in my culture it's very different, you couldn't possibly understand. but this is just "hip hip hooray" only at an inappropriate time. second, you can even see this during the video in Sabrina's confused reaction "your culture is yodeling?" bc, yes, obviously, yodeling is a part of Swiss culture. but Swiss culture has a lot going on so they don't go around yodeling at inappropriate times and then angrily inform people that it's just fine bc "that's just Swiss culture". so in this one brief interaction we see the truth laid bare: 1) loud noises to emote excitement is not some unique part of just your culture, that's a human universal. 2) that said, how it is expressed obviously varies. in Sabrina's culture, it shouldn't be expressed during a concert as she's trying to bring the mood down to instill a particular emotional vibe. 3) but somehow, everything today is lowest common denominator. the 'culture' that is the ugliest, most anti-social in western civilization gets to win, every time, bc "diversity is strength" or something. it's dis-civilizational. this is a relatively modest example of the broader phenomenon driving everything to shit.

@RockOperaKMS @atlanticesque Obviously, that doesn't mean I like it or wouldn't prefer a different system. I also know people that inherited family homes they couldn't pay the tax on just because of a ridiculous assessment on a house that hadn't actually been on the market in 70 years.
