There is a general lack of religious education in the United States that has absolutely nothing to do with any particular sect. Basic information your grandparents knew as a matter of general knowledge is simply unknown to people. As a person with a Bible degree, I’ve seen: 1) Catholics who think the Eucharist is entirely symbolic. 2) Baptists who think the central tenet of being a Baptist is that Baptism saves. 3) People who have literally no clue what any denomination means at all. 4) Can’t even name the Four Evangelists. Like there’s just absolutely no concept of basic Church history events. Total Biblical illiteracy. This stuff was general knowledge 30, 40, 50 years ago. If you told someone you were a conservative Presbyterian, they’d know you were a Calvinist. They would have told you this in a public school. Now even highly educated people know nothing about this unless they take a personal interest in it. None of this has anything to do with “Protestantism” or even liberalism. It’s only indirectly caused by liberalism because our education system is captured by militant secularists who won’t teach about these topics because American kids generally developed strong religious convictions when they did.
