2 years ago, I landed my first $5k/month retainer client. It didn’t start that way. I found them on Upwork looking for development help and took on a small $500 project that lasted about 3 weeks. They were an early-stage startup launching their first product. A few weeks later, they came back with more work. Then more. This was all before AI, people were barely using Ai for coding and co-pilot was go to tool for coding at that time for most of the developers I kept helping with features, suggesting improvements, solving problems before they became problems, and slowly became the person they trusted for product decisions. Eventually they proposed a retainer. At the time they had no development team, so I became their go-to person for everything product and engineering related. Fast forward to today: > 2+ years working together > ~$500k ARR business > still fully bootstrapped > still shipping new features regularly and If everything goes well, we’ll finally meet in person later this year. A $500 project ended up one of my biggest client. play long-term games.

To all development agency owners and design/dev agency owners: what did you do differently (if anything) to move from $10k/month to the next milestone? other than posting on X, what actually moved the needle? more referrals? better positioning? higher-ticket projects? partnerships? linkedin? cold outreach? i’ve been hovering around the $10k/month mark and i’m looking at different ways to get to the next level. curious what worked for you and what turned out to be a waste of time.

$40k/month for a markdown note-taking app? bear doesn't try to sell you anything upfront what stood out to me is how simple the onboarding is: - they drop you straight into the editor - the onboarding is literally a bunch of markdown notes - they let you experience the product before mentioning bear pro proof that great product design can sometimes outperform aggressive funnels you could probably recreate an onboarding like this with Anything in minutes nowadays the real challenge is putting this much thought into it
