Stating the obvious but Ronaldo is holding this Portugal side back. Saw it at last Euros and World Cup qualifying vs Ireland. So much potential in this squad but they’re wasting their prime years accommodating a 41-year-old up front. It’s absolutely insane.

Ronaldo's best WC was 2006 when he was 21 and they lost in the SF. I remember him actually being the biggest trouble on the pitch to Zidane's France in that game. He was actually kinda fun as a player to watch then too, despite all the theatrics and winking.

@UTDKobi It’s not that, Messi does so much more than just stand in the box waiting for it to fall to his feet. When every opposing team knows their game plan is to get the ball to Cristiano in the box, it becomes so much harder to execute

Argentina’s players will go to war for Messi. They’ll do everything possible to get him on the scoresheet, sacrificing themselves for the team and for him — and he rarely disappoints. Portugal are full of superstars and quality, yet they still struggle to create one clear chance for Ronaldo, let alone sacrifice everything to get him involved.

@dmill187 @Zonal_Marking yeah i think he makes sense here for england. i would have brought someone a little more creative and dynamic like foden or palmer to help unlock deeper defenses or tough opposition. they don’t have anyone with that vision or technique in the team so curious to see how it goes.

Bellingham is a strange player. He’s a “No 10” who never really thrives between the lines and is more effective either higher or deeper. On the evidence of the Croatia game Tuchel might have worked out how to use him best. ⬇️ nytimes.com/athletic/73709…
