Watching the ICC confirmation of charges hearing unsettles me. A tough-talking Bisaya is being judged within a Western legal and cultural framework that does not always translate. In many Visayan households, blunt language is normal. You misbehave and you fall, an elder snaps “Mirisi” which in Tagalog lands somewhere near “Buti nga.” In English, it roughly translates, “Deserved.” It sounds harsh if you read it cold on paper. At home, it was discipline, not damnation. When we fought with our cousins, an uncle would bark, “Adi hin sundang, pagtirigbasay kamo.” Go get the bolos and cut each other. Or, “Stop or I’ll hang you all from the ceiling.” We understood the code. It was exaggeration meant to shock us into stopping. Not one of those threats ever materialized into action. So when Digong told drug addicts to kill each other, I hear it through that same cultural filter of hyperbole and hard talk. My worry is that judges who did not grow up in that environment may hear only the literal words and miss the context that shaped them.
