If you could go back in time and chase any tornado event ever what would it be? I may have location bias but I would probably go back and chase Joplin 2011 or Picher 2008…

August 24 2006 between Nicolette MN and St Peter MN near North Star. Rated at F3, a QRT was used to survey one farmstead but it was determined that same residence was also hit by the March 29 1998 St Peter tornado so the structural integrity was in question. #mnwx

@Bill_Doms Simply curious to see what the damage looked like from this tornado. Ive been interested in the event for some time and always thought it was a very interesting tornado but I haven’t been able to find much on its affects, I found a link to this site but none of the images loaded.

@Twister32733092 @MatthewCappucci Usually when qrts are being called in, they are examining the structural integrity of the homes to see whether or not they qualify for EF4. This is likely whats happening with the two EF3 165 dis

BREAKING: Friday's Union City, Michigan tornado is being considered for an EF4 RATING! If upgraded, which is probable, it would be the STRONGEST Michigan tornado since 1977 – nearly HALF A CENTURY ago! Wind damage engineers/specialists are on site conducting forensic meteorological analysis. A violent tornado this early in the year in Michigan would be unprecedented. Winds of AT LEAST 165 mph were necessary to produce that damage; the EF4 category starts at 166 mph. It appears meteorologists are focused on damage at 1299 Prairie Rose Lane, where they reported the "destruction of engineered and/or well constructed residence; slab swept clean." Now they're tasked with determining if the structure was well-anchored; in other words, would the building have withstood EF3 winds but failed in EF4? Or could EF3 winds have caused the damage. Remember – the Enhanced Fujita scale is a DAMAGE scale. Winds may have been, and likely were, higher than damage would indicate. However, we can only rate a tornado based on what we can forensically reconstruct with DIs, or damage indicators. The meteorologists reported "Sill plates were screwed into concrete and ripped out (not broken)." @MyRadarWX

Jodie (47) was on the phone telling her kids to take cover when the tornado struck her van outside Fairview. We lost both her and 13 year old Lexi that night. 💔 A mother of 8 and grandma of 4, Jodie was weeks away from holding a new grandbaby. David and the kids need our help for funerals and the long road ahead. 🕊️ #okwx #oklahoma #tornado Please RT and give if you can: gofund.me/b43a1367f

@NickKrasz_Wx I don’t personally think we should utilize DOW readings into a tornado’s final rating, it’s a cool measurement but I prefer a strictly damage–based system. As for reanalysis of past tornadoes, also no. I think, as long as we’re consistent moving forward, then it doesn’t matter.

What are your thoughts on the latter two points? Personally, I don’t think the scale has to remain strictly damage-based. The original, and current, purpose of the EF Scale is to estimate a tornado’s intensity. Expanding the methodology would simply provide additional tools to classify tornadoes more accurately. I think incorporating mobile radar data is reasonable, as long as the methods used to convert instantaneous wind measurements to 3-second gusts are well-validated and scientifically sound. From a statistical standpoint, I’m not convinced it would dramatically alter the overall frequency of ratings, I'm sure they took this into consideration. That said, I’m interested in hearing a counterargument against incorporating mobile radar-derived wind estimates into tornado ratings.
Nick Krasznavolgyi@NickKrasz_Wx

Some interesting insights shared by Tim Marshall, relayed through a friend who spoke with him in person a few days ago: - The revised EF Scale is not expected to be implemented until at least 2030 (Government takes a long time to accept/implement it). - There is growing potential for past tornadoes to be re-evaluated, with Enderlin possibly opening the door for that process. - Mobile radar data is expected to play a definite role in tornado ratings under the revised scale. - He noted that the 2013 El Reno tornado would likely be rated EF5 today under those updated considerations.

Ralston, Nebraska - 5/6/1975 Somehow I’ve never seen photos of the Omaha F4 before and good god, this was a violent beast. Looks like Moore 2013 or Chapman 2016.
