@SeverusChud Yep, the biggest thing I missed last time I visited London was the cockneys! They were always helpful, friendly and cheerful! Now it’s surly Muslims and unfriendly Africans. Where are the English!?

The saddest thing about London is the centuries of aura and magic it’s built up, only for tourists to arrive and wonder, “Where the hell are the British people?” It’d be like visiting Tokyo and seeing no Japanese. The disappointment must be brutal.

Both completed in the early 2000s, phase one of Poundbury and the Scottish Parliament. Have a guess which one the @guardian described as "fake, heartless, authoritarian and grimly cute / sterile and suffocating" and which they described as "a masterpiece in the making".

seeing 13yos called babies is so infuriating as an educator. this is the primary reason there’s a resiliency crisis happening right now-everyone is proudly raising Adult Babies, setting their children up for failure, and then writing think pieces about why they won’t move out.
elizabeth@cobavines

@HighHeelEsquire She is THIRTEEN. If she was 16 or 17, yes this would be crazy overbearing. What are they doing at just 13 they don’t want the mom to see? She’s too young to be totally unsupervised. I don’t think this is too much at all. They’re babies.

@XCkyro @vista472904 Actually a whole lot of the post Vatican II despoilment of the church is from the Greatest and Silent generations who were the ADULTS in the 1960s and 1970s when felt banners and hideous new churches were being built. Also tearing out the original altars. Us boomers were kids.

@vista472904 Boomers had the levers of power in the episcopate and the local parishes when felt banners, girl altar boys, guitars and hideous church were built. It’s okay to call a spade a spade

My boomer great aunt, God bless her, I do love her, calls me just a few minutes ago. She asks if we’re home because she has Easter eggs for the kids and she missed us at mass this morning. I told her we went to the vigil to which she replies in horror, “the vigil!? That’s soooo long. You must be a glutton for punishment.” I replied to the effect that it’s the greatest liturgy the Church has given us, how could I be disappointed being immersed in the presence of Jesus etc. I love these people, but dang, it’s not hard to see why the Church has taken a beating with this generation

@avrilbradley23 I remember thr Bronx in the early 1960s compared with the early 1970s - it was like day and night. It fell apart soooo fast.

This is why 50s nostalgia was actually pretty understandable for much of the 20th Century. If you were an American born between 1920 and 1950 in big cities, you really would have experienced a massive crime wave and attendant urban decay in the space of 10 to 20 years.
RE-OPEN THE SIZZLERS@SaladBarFan

The late 60s-90s violent crime wave is *the* most important social phenomenon of the post-WWII era and we don’t even have a name for it!

My boomer uncle has $430,000 in his 401k. Won't turn the heat above 67. Still clips coupons. Hasn't bought new shoes in four years. Saving it. For what, I asked once. He thought about it for a long time. "I don't know," he said. "Emergencies."

@HeathCl95678272 @emzanotti Every culture depicts Jesus as looking like themselves. European artists were no exceptions. Here is a recognizable Jesus from the 6th century from Sinai. He looks like a lot of later European portrayals. The blond, blue eyed Jesus is not even what most Western art portrays.

@EastonWyatt10 @AlecLace @Enheduanna22 All this proves is that there is no such thing as a “generation” that all believes the same thing. I could bring up GenX, Millennial and GenZ folks who say the same thing. We are all individuals.

🚨 If you thought the Fenway Park footage was shocking... Just wait until you see Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, from 1957. This is what New York looked like before it became a sanctuary city. Unrecognizable

@EastonWyatt10 @AlecLace @Enheduanna22 Us normal boomers have had to live with the kind of people who were at the no kings protests all our lives. Can’t stand them! But remember it was normal boomers who voted in Giuliani in the 1990s which began the rebirth of NYC - then Millennials and GenZ began voting commie!

@emebdh @AlecLace @Enheduanna22 Yes but boomers brainwashed my generation that the USA was a melting pot and introduced us to communist ideas from a young age. I remember them telling us it was inevitable. Capitalism always leads to socialism and then communism. Who were the people most at the no kings protests

@EastonWyatt10 @AlecLace @Enheduanna22 I was a baby when this was filmed. It was not the “boomers” who wrecked NYC - it was the Greatest and Silent generations. We came of age as it began to deteriorate. I remember the early 1960s Bronx vs 1970s Bronx- day and night.

Matchmaking client, 38, 5’11, Orange County, newly minted surgeon, handsome, in-shape, and… Pale. Like, didn’t set foot outside his entire 7 year residency pale. He wants to date active women. He lives in Southern California. This is problematic. I tell him he needs to get a tan before we take his photos. He tells me he’s a doctor, and asks if I’ve heard of skin cancer. I tell him he’s a ghost, and ask if he wants a girlfriend. He’s agreed to walk outside shirtless 10 minutes a day until his photoshoot 🙃

19th-century women were unhappy in their marriages. 20th-century women were unhappy in their marriages. 21st-century women are still unhappy in their marriages. They even legalized same-sex marriage, and yet women are still unhappy in lesbian marriages At this point, it stops being about men. It starts to look like women are simply unhappy and miserable beings no matter what they’re given. No matter how much they receive, they always seem to want more and more. It’s like trying to fill an empty void. You guys have a problem and its a you problem.
ً@wynrosei

This was a depressingly common theme in 19th-century art.

@mamboitaliano__ I wear them and I like the way my legs look with them. And I’m an American. I see women with bare legs in cold weather looking miserable and think “if only there was something they could wear ON their legs 🤔 😁”

In the end, completely unintentionally and innocently, I sparked quite a debate about women’s socks Turns out American women “don’t really wear them anymore” That honestly surprised me, because in Europe we definitely do Now okay, California, but in winter, don’t you get cold?

Ladies, a genuine question out of pure curiosity: Why does First Lady Melania Trump never, ever wear stockings, on any occasion, in any weather, with any outfit? Really, never, never, never Does anyone know the reason? 🇺🇸👠

@emebdh @lisa_maths @mamboitaliano__ Because we choose to accept our age and imperfect legs. Also- Stockings are a challenge to pull on if you’re young and in great shape. Imagine being older with aches and pains and inflexibility. Cheers.
