Russia’s air strikes caused oil to spill into the Dniester River, Moldova’s main freshwater source.
Assistance was deployed from 🇱🇺 and 🇷🇴 via the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism, and the EU is mobilising its own #rescEU reserves to send specialised protective equipment.

Even wars have rules to protect civilians & aid workers who risk their lives for those in need – like the 800,000 who have been recently displaced in Libanon.

I am outraged by the killing of Lebanese Red Cross volunteer paramedic Youssef Assaf, who succumbed to the injuries he sustained while carrying out his humanitarian duty to assist and save lives. Youssef Assaf was among the Lebanese Red Cross @RedCrossLebanon ambulance volunteers who responded to people affected by hostilities following an airstrike in Majdal Zoun, Tyre in South Lebanon, on 9 March. While assisting in the evacuation of the wounded, he sustained serious injuries and later succumbed to them. The @IFRC extends its deepest condolences to Youssef’s family and loved ones, as well as colleagues at the Lebanese Red Cross. We also express our concern over the injuries sustained by three Lebanese Red Cross paramedics while carrying out ambulance missions at two separate locations. The IFRC reiterates its call that ambulance personnel, medical staff, and Lebanese Red Cross staff and volunteers must be respected and protected at all times. Our statement: ifrc.org/press-release/…

Alongside 855 Estonian citizens, we also assisted around 213 foreign nationals from Europe and beyond.
Through coordinated action and support from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, this joint effort showed how strong partnerships deliver when it matters most.

When crisis strikes, the EU is there to assist its citizens. EU Member States, supported by the EEAS and EU Delegations in the Middle East, have repatriated thousands of EU citizens from the region, in true EU solidarity spirit.
EU Member States repatriation flights have brought home more than 25,000 EU citizens since the beginning of the crisis. These include 9,000 EU citizens, repatriated through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism, with more than 80 flights operated by EU MS and five fully EU-financed rescEU flights.
